Hello from Seattle! I'm here for the American Library Association Midwinter conference.→[More:]I got here on Thursday night, leaving Monday afternoon. The hotel is right downtown, close to shopping and great restaurants. Yesterday I went to an all-day conference on business reference (my new specialty as of June). Today was so nice -- partly sunny and not too cold, so I blew off a few meetings to walk around downtown and wander down to the Pike Place Market. Tonight I went to a reception at the Experience Music Project, and tomorrow I am going to another reception there, then to one at the Space Needle.

It's good to be a librarian (with institutional funding!).

Today was our first glimpse of the sun in weeks. It was pretty grim for a while there for those of us who grew up in Southern California. (I grew up in Alaska, I'm used to lack of sunlight.)

Say "Hi" to Francis Barbagallo from the Deming, WA branch of the Whatcom County Libraries if you see her. Her boss, the head librarian, got all the public credit for telling the FBI to go climb their thumb when they barged in and demanded to see who was reading what book. But it was Francis who told them to be quiet and then grabbed them by the ears and escorted them out of the building when they wouldn't behave.

Librarians are doing a better job of protecting our freedom than the Fat Boys Institute and the mad Dauphin Bush.

Croctommy's been at the conference too. Look on flickr if you want to see what he looks like, and say hi to him if you see him. He's a big, handsome guy with a black goatee and shaved noggin.
