Your favourite lyrics??? [More:]Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow
everybody needs a bosom
Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow
everybody needs a bosom

Couldn’t sleep; too depressed to talk; but the lyrics popped into my head, and made me smile:)
"I used to be disgusted
Now I try to be amused..."
posted by jonmc 19 January | 15:36
and the following always gives me chills, but they lose impact without the music:

"With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere"
posted by jonmc 19 January | 15:38
and one last one:

"Poor man wanna be rich,
rich man wanna be king
And a king ain't satisfied
till he rules everything"

Eight Line Poem - David Bowie

"The tactful cactus by your window
Surveys the prairie of your room
Mobile spins to its collision
Clara puts her head between her paws
They've opened shops down West side
Will all the cacti find a home
But the key to the city
Is in the sun that pins the branches to the sky"

"I love you too much to take you to bed
Why fuck you when I can fuck with your head?"

always makes me smile.

Therapy? have some good, dark, twisted ones:

"Yeah, you took me, naive and ugly, into your festering heart
And you poured Eros' maggots down my throat, until I choked"

"It used to give me guilty thrills
Feeling in control and feeding on your innocence
I watched you torture yourself days
And fucking you got boring when it didn't feel so wrong"
posted by TheDonF 19 January | 16:04
Oh, and a couple from Midlake's latest album - although the way they're sung really makes them:

"we won't get married
'cause she won't have me"

"No-one seems to be around today
They must've all gone off without me again
I think I'll head home"

Little Boy sit on the corner and cry
Big Man come to ask him why, (he said)
"I can't do what the big boys do"
The man sit down and he cry too

(Man Smart, Woman Smarter by [not sure who])

or. . . . . .

Got himself married at seventeen
She looked real pretty but she talked kinda mean
He thought they'd work it out in the fullness of time.
Twenty years later he's headed south
A close-range victim of her sawed-off mouth
Leavin' their salad days behind.

When this kiss is over it will start again.
It will not be any different, it will be exactly
The same.
It's hard to imagine that nothing at all
Could be so exciting, could be so much fun.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

-Talking Heads, Heaven

Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you've got is hurt

U2 - One

The place where I come from is a small town
They think so small
They use small words
-but not me
Im smarter than that
I worked it out
Ive been stretching my mouth
To let those big words come right out

Ive had enough, Im getting out
To the city, the big big city
Ill be a big noise with all the big boys
Theres so much stuff I will own
And I will pray to a big god
As I kneel in the big church

Big Time- Peter Gabriel

Mine are so mainstream that I won't quote them here. Yeah, it's the Eagles, who I know we're supposed to fuckin' hate, but Peaceful, Easy Feelin' makes me catch my breath every damned time I hear it--takes me to a time when the lyrics really spoke to me. Plus, I can play it on guitar and ukulele!
posted by mrmoonpie 19 January | 16:44
moonpie: so far we've had Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Cornershop and U2. We ain't exactly crate-digging here. But that's fine, songs are popular for good reason sometimes.
posted by jonmc 19 January | 16:48
mrmoonpie, mine are very mainstream also. Speaking of the Eagles, "Life's Been Good", by Joe Walsh always makes me laugh to myself and smile. (Why are we supposed to hate The Eagles?)

Ahh, LoriFLA, Big Time is a great track (as is One). *wanders off to dig out So, programs out This Is The Picture (Excellent Birds)*

It is in the Wiki of this site. I had to choose between playing here or never listening to "Witchy Woman" ever again. Sometimes I wonder if I chose wisely.

Thanks danf, I haven't read the Wiki yet.

Oooh, I love the Boss too, and Mr. Moonpie's skill for playing that song on the Guitar and Ukulele!
LoriFla, my favourite U2 song is the one which has the video of the guy who's in-love with the trapeze artist... I'm forgetting the name of the song...

A few from the songs I'm liking the most at the moment:

America stands for freedom
But if you think you're free
Try walkin into a deli
And urinating on the cheese
Anarchy Burger - the Vandals

I gotta new rose ,i got her good
Guess I knew that I always would
I cant stop,to mess around
I gotta brand new rose in town
New Rose - the Damned

Quando à noite ela surgia
meu bem você cresceu
meu namoro é na folhinha
mulher de fases
Mulher de Fases - Raimundos

Me siento en el aire
Por eso cuando te veo
Comienzo a besarte.
Y si te despegas yo me despierto
De ese rico sueao que me dan tus besos. Suavemente - Elvis Crespo

pure genius, that.

Anything by Elvis Costello. Anything at all. Just open up a Costello song book, close your eyes and point. Whatever you land on will be brilliant.

Reminds me of the quote by Steven Wright:

"If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments."

Now I am rocking out to Amos, Bowie, Gabriel, and Springsteen, and U2.

Just some words that stick in my head:

Beth Neilsen Chapman's "Sand and Water"
(Refrain)
"All alone I came into this world
All alone I will someday die
Solid stone is just sand and water, baby
Sand and water, and a million years gone by"

Jimmy Buffet's "Let's Get Drunk and Screw"
John Prine & Steve Goodman's "Letter to the Penthouse Forum" (spoken word song)
Toby Keith's "I Ain't As Good As I Once Was"
"...I ain't as good as I once was
But I'm as good once as I ever was..."

Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Mornin' Rain"
Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down"
Bonnie Raitt's "Slow Ride"
Mike Reid & Allen Shamblin's "I Can't Make You Love Me"
Johnny Mercer & Harold Arlen's "Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive"
Johnny Mercer & Hoagy Carmichael's "Skylark"
Joseph Winner's "Little Brown Jug"
traditional "John Barleycorn"
Katherine Bates & Samuel Ward's "America The Beautiful" (warning: embedded music file, can be turned off)

I do not like you, College Brat
I do not like you and your frat
I do not like you at the shore
I do not like you drunk on Coors

Hate you and your average life
Hope you do not take a wife
Hope you don't decide to breed
'Cause that's one thing I do not need

I do not like you, Radical
Hate you and your fancy school
Wrong about the working class
I hope they kick your Harvard ass

I do not like you, world of ours
Rather live on planet Mars
Die from lack of oxygen
Than breathe the air of other men.

HEY!

Fuel, to get to sleep....

Memories are just where you laid them
Drag the waters till the depths give up their dead
What did you expect to find
Was there something you left behind
Don't you remember anything i said when i said
Chorus:
Don't fall away
And leave me to myself
Don't fall away
And leave love bleeding in my hands
In my hands again
And leave love bleeding in my hands
In my hands
Love lies bleeding
Hold me now I feel contagious
Am I the only place that you've left to go
She cries her life is like
Some movie black and white
Dead actors faking lines
Over and over and over again she cries
Chorus
And I wanted
You turned away
You don't remember
But i do
You never even tried
Don't fall away...

low - lttle argument with myself
i want to believe
i want to believe
i want to believe
i want to believe
just keep counting the stars
like someday you'll find out
just how many there are
and we all can go home
'cuz there's nothing as sad
as a man on his back
counting stars
but, i want to believe
yes, i want to believe

'cuz there's nothing as sad
as a man on his back
counting stars...

Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven
(Apocalyptic as fuck).

And if the ground's not cold
Everything is gonna burn
We'll all take turns
I'll get mine too.

Rock me, Joe.

And this song.
