Get an extra $30.00 (+/-) back on your 2006 taxes [More:]

There was a reddit link to an MSN article about a Motley Fool article earlier today that I thought you wouldn't want to miss.

The articles are about the IRS refunding/rebating charges one time on our 2006 returns for an excise tax on long distance created to pay for the Spanish-American War of 1898 that we all currently pay on our phone bills. You can read more facts on the IRS Q&A page. Here is the link to IRS Form 8913.
Don't you support our troops?

Thanks getoffmylawn, good info. I can't believe this tax hasn't been rescinded until now.

Wait, what? We're still paying for a war that was over a hundred years ago?!

I wonder if I should file taxes although I didn't make any money last year*. Would I still get the refund?

*Last I knew if I made at least $13,000 I had to file a tax return in the US.

Man, do you need to have your last 3 years of phone bills on hand to do this?

That IRS... they love to kill you with paper!

aha! I'm wrong!

The IRS is making it easier for individual taxpayers by offering a standard refund amount between $30 and $60, so that these taxpayers don’t need to gather old phone bills. Taxpayers who choose the standard amount will only need to fill out one line on their tax returns.

For Deborah from the IRS site:

I don’t have to file an income-tax return. How do I get the telephone tax refund?

For those people who do not otherwise have to file a tax return, there is a new simple form (1040EZ-T) that can be used to get this refund. Beginning in mid-January, this form can also be filed electronically for free via the Free File link this Web site.

Yay! for a bigger refund!

Excellent! I was equally this excited years ago when I learned that if you're a renter, you really shouldn't bother paying the phone company for the "Inside Wire Maintenance Charge." This is because a) there is hardly ever any need for inside wire maintenance and b)if there were, it would be your landlord's responsibility as property owner. This charge is optional (in theory, it's insurance), so you can just drop it. I've saved a couple hundred bucks over the last few years because of that.

Now, about this little windfall. $30 =

Six beers or five beers + one cover charge
One nice entree + glass of wine
New sweater
3-4 thrift store garments
1 hardcover book + 1 magazine
Magazine subscription
2+ months Netflix
Pair of very nice winter gloves
Tank of gas
One fabulous antipasto platter containing roasted red pepper, cured sausages, cheese, and olives
2 CDs
Three movie tickets
Ticket to a good regional theatrical production
2 sets of guitar strings
Some canaries
Footlong sub for the guys in the back
3 pair ragg wool socks

I don't wanna think about it. *shudder*

Thanks for that little tidbit, goml! I'll have to ask my mum to pick up the form for me.

I wonder if I can donate it to help pay off the Iraq war.
