Mac ad question I saw a Mac ad last night that I don't get. Would someone please explain it to me?→[More:]

The PC guy is going in for surgery or something and says to the Mac guy, if I don't come back you can have my peripherals and then the screen cuts to the Mac guy looking at the Mac screen. WTF?

Now, Macs have Intel chips inside, so they can work with all the stuff that PC can work with, I guess. The PC is going in to upgrade to Vista.

I just think it's cute that the PC guy is leaving all his stuff to the Mac guy. True love!

I haven't seen this ad but it sounds like they're trying to appeal to PC->Mac switchers by emphasizing that they can keep/use all their existing peripherals.

I think the "speaking of peripherals" comment and then the image of the iMac is because the iMac is self-contained. The monitor is built-in. That's my take at least.

Ad is here in case others haven't seen it.

On preview, if the ad showed the Mac Mini I might agree with Rhomboid. The Mini ships without a keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc, while the iMac has the monitor built-in.

BTW, even non-Intel Macs support non-Mac peripherals. I use them with my eMac.

So I guess it is that Mac looks at his computer and is thinking WTF do I need PC's peripherals for - because Mac has its' own peripherals already built in??? So are PC peripherals an external item that gets hooked up to a PC? Hope me understand, I've never used anything but a Mac.

peripherals = mice, monitors, keyboards, memory card readers, etc, etc, etc. Anything that can be plugged into a USB, firewire port, etc.

They are indeed the cutest couple on TV right now. I think it's fascinating that PC guy (the hilarious John Hodgeman) got his contract renewed for a new set of ads while the Mac guy did not.

Heh. "Peripherals" always makes me think back fondly to the days of the Commodore 64 where the main peripheral was the model 1541, a huge brick of a floppy disk drive that you could easily beat someone to a pulp with. If you were lucky, you also had a dot matrix printer. Or, if you were really unfortunate you had just a plain old cassette tape player.

I just saw this ad for the first time and thought of this post...probably well after anyone's likely to check it again, but ah well. The "speaking of peripherals" is said after PC turns around in his hospital gown and starts walking away; Mac guy turns away really quickly and then says it.

So it's a reference to his ass.

No, really.

occhiblu I've seen that comercial too but goml refers to "and then the screen cuts to the Mac guy looking at the Mac screen". I've never seen one with mac guy looking at a screen.

I'm thinking she saw it incorrectly? It does cut to a shot of the mac screen, but the Mac guy's not in that shot.
