I'm wearing a belly warmer today. [More:]

It's made out of a lovely lambswool sweater I accidentally shrunk. It's keeping my kidneys warm, which feels marvelous, but "belly warmer" is so much cuter than "kidney warmer".
May I please ask you to post a photo so as I may know what you are talking about?

I have this image in my head that you shrunk a sweater and then cut the neck and arms off and are wearing it like a tube top around your mid section.

goml, that's exactly what I'm talking about. See original reference here.

That's the same image I have and based on the description I'm thinking that's what specklet is wearing.

I am so very confused.

Oh I love them!

Ok. Thanks for the linky - I get it. It looks like a giant cumberbund. I like it.

That's what I'm gonna do with all my shrunken sweaters now. I get too cold in the winter and have such a hard time warming up.

Also, an old labmate used to use the sleeves of shrunken sweaters as leg warmers, which I also think is a splendid idea. Again, because I'm so freakin' cold all the time.

I wear cropped length shirts and I always feel a draft going down my waitband. This is perfect because I am one of those people that loves to leave my under shirt sticking out from under my over shirt for the layered look.

Hee! That's what I did with the sleeves of this belly warmer's mother sweater!

Audrey? Is that you?

Then again, Spexx would look great with a pair o' shrunken tube sox as earrings.

That'll be all. I'll get my ass back to work now.

I must have these. Especially those from the Japanese designer. I'm in love.

*once wore a big soccer sock on her head during an office hockey match*

I love these too. I'd make my own if I were at all crafty with fabric. Only thing I'm crafty with is flour and sugar.

I knew a girl in middle school that cut the top band of her sweat socks off and wore them around her wrists when she'd play sports to keep the sweat from ruining her grip.

Sweatbands.

Am I the only one who cringes a little at the phrase "belly warmer?" Isn't that what male slave owners used to call the female slaves they brought to bed with them?
posted by jrossi4r 17 January | 16:23
Ugh! I hadn't thought of that. Well, I'm recaliming it and deeming it cute.

Or... tummy sock?
posted by Specklet 17 January | 19:02
Wait, doesn't the sweater all unravel when you cut it up? (but yes, mucho cute-o - I gusto)
posted by taz 17 January | 19:33
Not this one, taz, but other you'd have to hem...
posted by Specklet 17 January | 19:47
Ack, I've never heard that reference, jrossi4r.

I've always heard of "belly warmers" as those giant, ugly 60s and 70s ties the size of a commercial landing airstrip.

Weird. Weird weird weird. But then I don't have a problem keeping my midsection warm. It's my feet and hands that I have problems with. It's hard to type with gloves or mittens.

I remember them using it in "Roots" on the slave ship. I think Ralph Waite may have said it. Traumatic seeing Mr. Walton engage in such behavior.

But yes, Specks. Reclaim it. Belly Warmer does sound much cuter than, say, "Gut Cozy."
