Let's make bunnies! Instructions included! Recently, I found some fantastic little bunnies on flickr, and their creator has made us a step-by-step tutorial so we can make our own! OMG!
That's cute. I will make a couple bunnies tonight. I have the perfect fabric for it. :)

Ooh ooh awesome! I'm totally gonna make some, but maybe not tonight.

And if you don't stuff them, you have finger puppets!
posted by gaspode 16 January | 17:07
Would anybody be interested in a bunny exchange?
posted by pieisexactlythree 16 January | 17:10
Sure.
posted by LoriFLA 16 January | 17:12
I was hoping to find a use for some old T-shirts I've got hanging around. Count me in on the bunny exchange!

...never minding that there are two Xmas bunny cards I think I forgot to send...
posted by TrishaLynn 16 January | 17:15
Yes! Bunny exchange!

(oooh and I might mount magnets on the back and make fridge magnets!)
posted by gaspode 16 January | 17:17
clever!

That's a fantastic idea, gaspode!

I think I can cajole Cinnamon into helping put a couple bunnies together. :)
posted by me3dia 16 January | 17:39
I hope someday the artist would tell us how to make this one!

I want in on the swap, please!
posted by Specklet 16 January | 18:47
I'll let this thread gestate a couple days and then I'll send out an email to all those interested in the bunny swap.
posted by pieisexactlythree 16 January | 19:03
Possibly in, if there's no big rush.

am so very very tired
posted by ethylene 16 January | 19:10
i'd like to be in on the swap, if we can get a couple weeks or so to practice.
posted by casarkos 16 January | 21:01
Rather tempted to take part in this, because it looks like a lot of fun. But it does mean that someone will be receiving a rather 'unique' bunny, because it has been at least a decade since I did anything 'crafty'. And I can't sew very well. But that's all part of the charm, right?
posted by chrismear 16 January | 21:48
Alright bunnies, first of all, no rush on this. I'll bump as a reminder in a few days, and then send out an organizational email. We can pick a date for the exchange later, so it will be, oh, I don't know, maybe in a couple weeks or something. Or, they could be bunny valentines.
posted by pieisexactlythree 16 January | 21:54
I will make happily make a bunny.
posted by typewriter 16 January | 22:15
It's probably the bleeding obvious, but I will say it anyway: When you cut out two bunny shapes, fold a piece of fabric right sides together and trace your bunny shape onto the wrong side.
posted by LoriFLA 16 January | 22:20
Bunnies! Bunnies for everyone!
posted by youngergirl44 17 January | 01:07
I want to make (and exchange) bunnies, too!
posted by deborah 17 January | 13:40
I made a couple bunnies! I stole gaspode's idea and stuck magnets on the back. If we do the exchange I will do something different for a surprise.

posted by LoriFLA 17 January | 18:45
I clicked the link, but saw no deformed bunnies, just SUPAH CUTE BUNNIES!
posted by chrismear 17 January | 18:52
I'm in for a couple of bunnies. My mind is going a mile a minute right now. And LoriFLA, those are very cute bunnies!
posted by redvixen 17 January | 19:03
Thanks Chris and redvixen, they were super duper easy.
posted by LoriFLA 17 January | 19:07
I'ma going to the craft store this week, so I'll pick up some stuffin for some bunnies.
posted by muddgirl 18 January | 08:41
I just figured out that to save money and not waste a whole bag of stuffing, cotton wool will do quite nicely for stuffing too!
posted by pieisexactlythree 18 January | 12:31
Are we already making them? Oh noez, I have to catch up!
posted by typewriter 18 January | 13:50
I haven't started yet. Don't worry.
posted by pieisexactlythree 18 January | 14:32
Deformed? As if! And you stitched on the noses and eyeses. Good idea!

I haven't started either. I'll have to get supplies (this weekend?) as well.

What do you mean by cotton wool, pie?

I was thinking of that stuff that they pack in aspirin bottles.
posted by pieisexactlythree 18 January | 16:37
I just finished mine. It's lumpy and uneven, but it was made with love.
posted by getoffmylawn 20 January | 15:31
I'm going to roll out a prototype tonight. Photos soon!
posted by pieisexactlythree 23 January | 13:02
I found some crazy ass fabrics hanging out in my house! Fun bunnies from me soon too...
posted by typewriter 23 January | 16:32
I went to google and searched for rabbit (& bunny) silhouette(s). I then traced them on a piece of paper and used that for my pattern instead of the shape used in the tutorial. I made the first one like the instructions, but the one I am making now is much different. You can see here.

YAY! Making bunnies makes me so HAPPY!
posted by getoffmylawn 23 January | 16:44
goml - thanks for linking to those silhouettes! I've been meaning to try this, but I'm absolutely crap at freehand drawing. This'll be a great project to test out my new sewing machine!
posted by muddgirl 23 January | 16:52
The prototype is ready! Definitely going to make the next one a bit bigger...
posted by pieisexactlythree 24 January | 00:57
muddgirl - if I had a machine I would have bunnies for EVERYONE! Sewing by hand takes forever. No matter how many stiches I put in it seems that I have to make 3 more to keep the edges together. The first one I made when I tried to stuff it I must have stuffed too hard and the seams kind of came apart (separated a little bit). Maddening. I envy the use of a machine. There is this cheap ass $20.00 "beginner" sewing machine at Rite-Aid of all places. I am fairly tempted to buy it. Well, I guess if I use to make nothing but bunnies it'll be worth it, and then I could possibly use it for small mending jobs or something - it's only $20 bucks -

I hesitated to post the silhouettes because I didn't want to take anything away from the original artist/idea, but I am an individulaist, as are all of the other bunnies, and the idea is the same principal and I appreciate the artist taking the time to make the tutorial. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the bunny s/he made as a pin cushion. I want a pattern for that one next!

I am so excited for the bunny exchange, I haven't done anything like this ages and I really, really needed it. I have been spending WAY too much time in front of the computer. This is a fantasic idea!

On preview: boy I typed a lot - my excitement ran away with me.

Bunny 3: Too skinny
Bunny 4: don't hold your breath

Those look great! However, I find their lack of faces disturbing.
posted by pieisexactlythree 25 January | 01:24
I just got a really brilliant idea last night: I have a few nice ties with stains that the dry cleaner couldn't get off. What better way to use them than pretty silk bunnies!?
posted by pieisexactlythree 25 January | 12:30
I am so in love with this whole idea and all the creativity swimming around. This is definitely a the best of Mecha type thing!
posted by getoffmylawn 25 January | 12:43
My bunnies will get faces, I promise. I was trying to get the size and such taken care of before I started giving them little personalities. Plus, I was going to sew beads on for eyes, but that's proving difficult.
posted by youngergirl44 25 January | 23:05
ok this is cute. :)

I find their lack of faces disturbing.

I'm sure they're just facing away from you.
posted by chrismear 26 January | 09:10
Youngergirl44, I am having the same issue. I think sewing eyes (other embellishments) on first then putting the right sides together and sewing might be the way to go.

Calliing LoriFla - is that how you got the eyes on?
posted by getoffmylawn 26 January | 10:26
GOML, I'm sorry, I haven't kept up with this thread. I stitched the eyes and mouth/nose onto the front side of the bunny before I constructed it. I used a few strands of embroidery floss. The eyes are amateur French knots, and the mouth, as you can see, is a simple X.

I love the bunnies!

I just emailed everyone in this thread who has an address posted. I'm trying to gather mailing addresses for a bunny exchange, so those of you who want in but haven't posted here or don't have an email address listed on your profile page, please contact me and I'll add you to the list. Next, I'll figure out a system to match people up with bunny recipients.
posted by pieisexactlythree 26 January | 16:31
Can we maybe also have the option to get more than one address if we feel like sending extra bunnies? Kinda like we did with holiday cards? I think once mine stop turning out like frankenstein, I'll want to make more than one to send out.
posted by youngergirl44 26 January | 18:15
Sure. I was thinking of groups of four, so you'll end up getting three bunnies in the mail.
posted by pieisexactlythree 28 January | 15:39
I bought stuffing!

These bunnies, they multiply?≡ Click to see image ≡
posted by getoffmylawn 29 January | 15:27
I have two more people to add to the list. I'll do so and re-issue it shortly. Now there will be two groups of five and one group of four.
posted by pieisexactlythree 30 January | 21:28
I have not started mine yet. Life has gotten in the way...so if you are on my list...they will be coming, but it won't be for another few weeks.
posted by typewriter 31 January | 12:35
type, you're on the list, in group three, with Deborah, Redvixen and youngergirl44.

I've been making bunieeeeees!
posted by Specklet 05 February | 13:27
I've produced seven so far. Has anybody else noticed that when making bunnies on a sewing machine the ears tend to curve inwards?

I don't know why this is happening, other than because of the tendency of the fabric (I'm using silk) to pucker in tight corners.
posted by pieisexactlythree 05 February | 13:48
So you are using the tie silk, pie? That was a good idea.

Here's my first attempt:

I haven't made any more yet, but they are on the agenda. This one is going to the mister because I want to make some adjustments to my pattern before I make any more.
posted by deborah 06 February | 14:44
hehe - my mister is getting at least four bunnies that needed adjustment :)

Bunnies mailed!
posted by pieisexactlythree 09 February | 18:48
pi, you are so good. The bunnies are so cute. I hope to send mine out tomorrow or Monday. I just finished my bunnies, and missed the post office today.
posted by LoriFLA 09 February | 19:21
Sorry bunnies, I spent all weekend looking for somewhere in my strange new town that sells stuffing, but to no avail. I've had to order some on the Bay of e. So my bunnies will probably go out at the end of the week.
posted by chrismear 12 February | 10:44
I only have two more to make - then everyone on the list is getting one! I've been busy... Hopefully they'll go out tomorrow or Saturday. But Saturday at the post office by my house is hell on earth. So maybe Monday...
posted by youngergirl44 16 February | 00:23
Well my mail-order stuffing arrived. Do you think I got enough to make five small bunnies?
