Let's make bunnies! Instructions included! Recently, I found some fantastic little bunnies on flickr, and their creator has made us a step-by-step tutorial so we can make our own! OMG!
Rather tempted to take part in this, because it looks like a lot of fun. But it does mean that someone will be receiving a rather 'unique' bunny, because it has been at least a decade since I did anything 'crafty'. And I can't sew very well. But that's all part of the charm, right?
Alright bunnies, first of all, no rush on this. I'll bump as a reminder in a few days, and then send out an organizational email. We can pick a date for the exchange later, so it will be, oh, I don't know, maybe in a couple weeks or something. Or, they could be bunny valentines.
It's probably the bleeding obvious, but I will say it anyway: When you cut out two bunny shapes, fold a piece of fabric right sides together and trace your bunny shape onto the wrong side.
I went to google and searched for rabbit (& bunny) silhouette(s). I then traced them on a piece of paper and used that for my pattern instead of the shape used in the tutorial. I made the first one like the instructions, but the one I am making now is much different. You can see here.
goml - thanks for linking to those silhouettes! I've been meaning to try this, but I'm absolutely crap at freehand drawing. This'll be a great project to test out my new sewing machine!
muddgirl - if I had a machine I would have bunnies for EVERYONE! Sewing by hand takes forever. No matter how many stiches I put in it seems that I have to make 3 more to keep the edges together. The first one I made when I tried to stuff it I must have stuffed too hard and the seams kind of came apart (separated a little bit). Maddening. I envy the use of a machine. There is this cheap ass $20.00 "beginner" sewing machine at Rite-Aid of all places. I am fairly tempted to buy it. Well, I guess if I use to make nothing but bunnies it'll be worth it, and then I could possibly use it for small mending jobs or something - it's only $20 bucks -
I hesitated to post the silhouettes because I didn't want to take anything away from the original artist/idea, but I am an individulaist, as are all of the other bunnies, and the idea is the same principal and I appreciate the artist taking the time to make the tutorial. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the bunny s/he made as a pin cushion. I want a pattern for that one next!
I am so excited for the bunny exchange, I haven't done anything like this ages and I really, really needed it. I have been spending WAY too much time in front of the computer. This is a fantasic idea!
On preview: boy I typed a lot - my excitement ran away with me.
I just got a really brilliant idea last night: I have a few nice ties with stains that the dry cleaner couldn't get off. What better way to use them than pretty silk bunnies!?
My bunnies will get faces, I promise. I was trying to get the size and such taken care of before I started giving them little personalities. Plus, I was going to sew beads on for eyes, but that's proving difficult.
Youngergirl44, I am having the same issue. I think sewing eyes (other embellishments) on first then putting the right sides together and sewing might be the way to go.
Calliing LoriFla - is that how you got the eyes on?
GOML, I'm sorry, I haven't kept up with this thread. I stitched the eyes and mouth/nose onto the front side of the bunny before I constructed it. I used a few strands of embroidery floss. The eyes are amateur French knots, and the mouth, as you can see, is a simple X.
I just emailed everyone in this thread who has an address posted. I'm trying to gather mailing addresses for a bunny exchange, so those of you who want in but haven't posted here or don't have an email address listed on your profile page, please contact me and I'll add you to the list. Next, I'll figure out a system to match people up with bunny recipients.
Can we maybe also have the option to get more than one address if we feel like sending extra bunnies? Kinda like we did with holiday cards? I think once mine stop turning out like frankenstein, I'll want to make more than one to send out.
I haven't made any more yet, but they are on the agenda. This one is going to the mister because I want to make some adjustments to my pattern before I make any more.
pi, you are so good. The bunnies are so cute. I hope to send mine out tomorrow or Monday. I just finished my bunnies, and missed the post office today.
Sorry bunnies, I spent all weekend looking for somewhere in my strange new town that sells stuffing, but to no avail. I've had to order some on the Bay of e. So my bunnies will probably go out at the end of the week.
I only have two more to make - then everyone on the list is getting one! I've been busy... Hopefully they'll go out tomorrow or Saturday. But Saturday at the post office by my house is hell on earth. So maybe Monday...
