"I hate to write reviews like this". William A. Vollmann on Anthony Swofford's first novel.

See, that's too bad. I prefer reviews that relish a necessary skewering. Me and my literary bloodlust...

there is no reason why the Japanese scenes of “Exit A” couldn’t have been better.

except maybe the difference between writing what you know and knowing how to write.

Swofford has a prose style that is equal to the task of writing a personal memoir. However, when I read the bio-blurb on the slipcover of Jarhead that he was writing a novel, I snickered and thought, "That oughta be a riot."

Now I want to read Jarhead.

It's a good book; the movie doesn't really do it justice at all.

I'd be honored if William T. Vollmann wrote that review of my work. Crushed, for the effort I put forth with my new book and my failure in his eyes, but then honored as well.
