Thanks BP. I've had this in my bookmarks forever and thought I should share.

Wow, I love the huge sweeping lines of the cities. They don't look "natural" so much as something born out of a dream of flight and the future. I've noticed that a lot of these illustrators are living in America, which makes sense as there is so much more space to build these grand dreams than in Europe. The illustrations from Fantasy and Science Fiction and Astounding Science Fiction have the same theme - everything's big and still has an almost art-deco feel to it.
Contrast this with today. A quote from Bruce Sterling from his preface to Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology.

For the cyberpunks, by stark contrast, technology is visceral. It is not the bottled genie of remote Big Science boffins; it is pervasive, utterly intimate. Not outside us, but next to us. Under our skin; often, inside our minds.

Technology itself has changed. Not for us the giant steam-snorting wonders of the past: the Hoover Dam, the Empire State Building, the nuclear power plant. Eighties tech sticks to the skin, responds to the touch: the personal computer, the Sony Walkman, the portable telephone, the soft contact lens.

Link to full preface.

Hey pie! Been busy with holidays, doing things for the organisation I'm working for and trying to design a new website for an art gallery here in Vancouver. They're going to pay me in art, which'll be very cool. Hmm. maybe I'll do a radio show, as I haven't done one in a while.

Oh, very cool post, eek. Has this been on MeFi? I'd recommend it.

Just yesterday I was thinking of a word to describe "the future as seen from the past" and the best I came up with was futurepast, but "retrofuture" is PERFECT! Great link, too.

I love the phrase myself, Rock Steady, and thought I had coined one, but the domain has already been registered. All my original ideas are like that it seems: not original.
