iPhone, apparently.
posted by grabbingsand 09 January | 12:53
I thought they couldn't call it iPhone?
posted by drezdn 09 January | 12:55
Looks like they are.
Its got a Cingular logo on it, too.

And as predicted a year ago, this one dumps the wheel-control entirely and goes with a screen all across the device. Changes UI to fit need.

Cingular? Feh. I wonder if there will be a CDMA version.

And changes UI to fit need? There was a universal remote control like that. People complain that the lack of hard buttons makes it impossible to operate the thing without looking at it--for a phone, that seems like a big deal.

(Still, I kinda want one.)

Engadget has better photos.

Holy crap. Is it weird that I have an erection right now?

Hellbient, it is weird but you're not alone. OMG, those things are cool. I'm not even a phone geek and I want one.

With all the hype surrounding this keynote and the iPhone, it's incredible that they managed to still hit a home-run of a first impression.

8GB? My iPod is 20Gb. Maybe I'll wait.

$600 dollars for the iPhone. I might get one in a few years, once they're bigger and cheaper.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 January | 14:12
They can call their product an iPhone. but so can anybody else in the US. In other countries, Apple's locked down the name.
posted by ardgedee 09 January | 14:16
I doubt they'll get cheaper, pinks.

WHERE'S MY LEOPARD INFORMATION?! That was the only thing I was really interested in. Dammit.

Phone: looks amazing, dumps all over the opposition, very expensive, no sign of a European deal - I'm almost certain that Cingular aren't in the UK. So: thank God they've finally announced the damn phone - maybe now people can shut the hell up about it, but I wanted Leopard stuff. Oh well.

crackerassed yuppie consumer zombies...

"I DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS, BUT I WANT ONE!"

i hope these things come with a self-destruct mechanism, at least

I don't think you get it, Wedge - Apple is going to save the world!

I want. I want. I want.

The iPhone was a staple of the rumor mill for years. As in, 'This time The Steve will announce it, for really real!' So an actual announcement effectively blindsides everybody. Even the rumor-mongering fanboys with their mocked-up iPhones should be caught up short by this.

Not least because it's so much better in design than the wildest flight of fancy I'd seen.

And Wedge: If you'd been putting up with the awful feature implementations current mobile phones have, you'd find it tempting. And if you'd had to buy your own Treo or Blackberry lately, you wouldn't find the price disconcerting.

Someone needs to remind Steve Jobs that patents aren't a reflection of innovation, and bragging about a patent count is really sad.

I'm not normally into gadgets but I SO WANT ONE!!!!
posted by phoenixc 09 January | 14:45
I want. I want. I want.

seanyboy - checkout the UK and US Apple Stores: the UK one doesn't even have the phone on it. The US one does and that's not shipping until June. We've got a long wait. Which is good, as I can't afford it!
posted by TheDonF 09 January | 14:46
The iPhone looks incredible - exactly what a phone should be (even though 8GB is a bit tight). Certainly worth considering.

And by the way guys - the engadget article said "Europe in the 4th quarter of this year, Asia in 2008". So maybe we won't have to wait too long after all.

Gah, on one had this is exactly what I've been looking for in a gadget (except for the adherence to iTunes, which I dislike on Windows), there's no way I'd use it enough to justify the price!

I had resigned myself to replacing my stolen 5.0 ipod with a refurb 4th G 30 gig and felt good about it.

After seeing this, I feel like a 'po relation. Maybe I can get work to buy me one, since I need a work cellphone. . .dream on dan.

Well, that didn't take long

One thing I just thought of: that big ol' screen is going to be constantly covered in grody face oil, foundation, etc. Either that, or it's supposed to be used on speakerphone, which won't be annoying at all.

I know my tiny little cell phone screen has to be wiped off once in a while. How do other smartphone users deal with the face crud issue?
posted by muddgirl 09 January | 18:36
Oh.
My.
God.

I am prepared to swap any one of my children for one of these.

I'll buy two. One to use and the other to mock impoverished Mechazens.
