Dumb Domain Question, with a prize inside. I offered to host a friend's weblog on my iconomy.addr.com account. Can he just buy a domain name and have it pointed to a directory on my site? [More:]

Like, if the url to his weblog was iconomy.addr.com/weblog, could he buy the domain inlovewithacyclops.com and have it point to there? I've never bought a domain so I have no idea how this works.

Told you it was a dumb question.

To make up for it, here's a cool photograph of Bill Clinton meeting JFK in 1962.
I wonder if Bubba & Jack are discussing broads.

I *think* he will have to point it to iconomy.addr.com (or a subdomain like him.iconomy.addr.com) and then a redirect will have to be set up (via a myriad number of ways) to send peopple to iconomy.addr.com/weblog. It will be transparent to the users, but technically the traffic starts at the home page.

Wait a minute, whoever is doing the redirect to iconomy.addr.com (probably the registrar) ought to be able to redirect to iconomy.addr.com/weblog.

That picture would be so much awesomer if Clinton were wearing a beret.

In other words, if he hasn't bought the domain yet, just have him ask the potential registrar if they'll do this for him free. If they don't, he should take his business elsewhere.

Thanks, dano. Nope he hasn't bought a domain name yet.

Thanks for making me laugh so loud the people in the next room heard me, jrossi. :)

You need to ask your web host (addr) if they will allow this. There are ways and means of redirecting traffic from his domain to "http://iconomy.addr.com/hisSpace", but unless addr provide some facility for assigning domain names to users or subdirectories, these methods can be quite clunky. I suspect that you need to have a Silver Account at Addr to do this properly, and it's worth asking them to be sure.

If it comes down to it, his domain registrar almost certainly offers a cheap service to provide a redirect from inlovewithacyclops.com to iconomy.addr.com/weblog so your web host won't need to be involved. It won't look as slick as if you were able to host inlovewithacyclops.com/weblog, though.

If he's going to get his own web host and do stuff with the domain other than the weblog, he can put this in the top-level .htaccess file:
Redirect permanent /weblog http://iconomy.addr.com/weblog

Hmm. I just repeated what dano said. So listen to dano.

Just to reiterate my position and confuse you some more.

redirects will work, but they can be a bit kludgy

somebody will type inlovewithacyclops.com into the address bar.
A webpage on inlovewithacyclops.com will tell the web browser to automatically go to http://iconomy.addr.com/weblog. The address in the address bar will then show http://iconomy.addr.com/weblog.

e.g.
Typing "http://www.wikipedia.com/wiki/Metafilter" into your address bar will automatically redirect to "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metafilter"

The original webpage name is therefore lost.
If I'm wrong on this, somebody please tell me.

You're right. I almost said "semi-transparent to the user" above, but decided to keep it simple for moment. The goal, as I understand it, is to have inlovewithacyclops.com work -- not to make it look like it's hosted on it's own server.

AFAIK, the only way to really hide iconomy.addr.com in the address bar would be an even uglier use of frames.

Thanks for all the help. You understood the goal correctly, dano.
