This is killing me... Way back in mid-to-late 2004, a prank was pulled on a forum. Someone claimed they found a camera while hiking in the woods, and posted the pictures on this particular thread. As you looked through the pix, strange things started popping out.[More:]

At first it looked just like a regular collection of photos from a nature hike, but then, if you looked closer, you could see little creatures hiding up in the trees. Then, as the fictional photographer approached a collection of strange old ruins, humanoid shapes started to pop out in the background.

The last picture was a jumbled mess, but the OP said he had a program that could clean it up. He kept posting the picture as it was being decrypted, and finally, after 8 hours of decryption, a picture emerged of an alien foot. It was hilarious and really, really engaging.

Does anyone remember this, and if so, do you have the linked saved somewhere in the bowels of your machine?
Was it this?

"I found a camera in the woods."

That WAS pretty brilliant... I think it was posted on several different forums at the same time back in the day.

Yes! Yes! That was it. Man, I remember spending over an hour reading that thread comment by comment. The pictures were obviously fake, but it was fun to follow along. Good times. Good times.

Ok, I don't want to look at that link, because I'm sure it's gonna be a little creepy, and I'll creep myself out, like when I used to listen to Art Bell as a kid.

Except I know I WILL look at the link, and I WILL creep myself out. Damn.

I believe it was posted to Something Awful, too.

I posted it on metafilter years ago although all the links are dead now. The "here and here" links went to an unaltered version of one of the photos and a picture of the tower, later identified as an observation tower on Mt. Wachuset, MA although I can't find a picture of it.

Heh, I tried to follow "they have resurfaced" link and was told:
You have been banned from this forum.

Funny, I don't remember insulting anyone there.

I like the one about the guy who finds a cave and explores it. He talks about all these screams and weird noises he hears, but he keeps exploring it. It reads like a journal, then it just leaves off.... did someone post it here around Halloween perhaps?

That sucker gave me nightmares...

Here's a picture of the tower although looking at it I guess it could be a different one. And here's a small picture of the brick structure.

And yeah, I love that caver ted story. I remember getting freaked out reading it.

IIRC, the caver story was posted to Mefi.

Not to derail but:

court siem = bob sarabia = puke & cry? I knew bs was pc, but didn't realize cs was bs. Heh.

And I'm probably the last one to figure it out. I'm slow that way.
posted by deborah 04 January | 13:28
I didn't know any of that...

Nor did I.

Oh, Doohickie, I know the story you're talking about..probably got it from MetaFilter. It was a creepy story, and a quick read.

And Deborah, I didn't know any of that, either.
