I am ashamed of my country [More:] So, did you hear about the president's funeral where no one showed up? According to the link, our current prez was too busy "cutting cedar and riding his bike on his ranch in Texas." Unfortunately, this isn't just a bitchfest directed toward the Repugs, because new Democratic Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi missed the funeral as well. In fact over 90% of the House of Representatives didn't show, and it doesn't sound like many members of the public attended either.

He was a frickin' president guys! The way the article reads it sounds like my dad had more mourners at his funeral than Ford did. You may or may not remember his administration, and like I, you may have disagreed with some of his actions, but he ruled this country in difficult times, immediately after another president had resigned in disgrace... a task, by the way, he did not seek out but was thrust upon him. His unassuming manner helped mend the nation.

To Ford's family, I would like to offer my condolences.

.
Wow. That's really sad. Even some of the pallbearers were no-shows. But hey...there was brush to be cleared.

Waiting in the Capitol crypt -- the holding place for lawmakers attending the rites for Ford -- Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) noted the absence of a quorum. There were only eight congressmen in the room, and a couple of them were watching the Texas-Iowa football game. "What's the score?" one called out.

...damn.

Perhaps you should write your reps and demand to know why they didn't attend (assuming they didn't).

Statesmanship died a long time ago, as you can see.

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me at all.

According to that article, the real funeral is on Tuesday, so nobody skipped the main event. That would be very weird. Other than that, I suppose it's sort of weird, but it is vacation. Bad time to die- he should have waited a little longer! Come on, he held out until 93, what's another few weeks?

Watching football games at funerals is not as unusual as one would hope.

Tell us stories, funeral director! Tell us craaaazy stories!

Oh, pinky, I've heard a few of Chef's funeral stories. Ask about the death row family. That's a doozy.

You had me at James Sensenbrenner hanging out in the Capitol crypt.

Frankly, it was nice to be spared W's smirking bored fratboy mug at another official-Washington event. It was bad enough that we were subjected to Dick Cheney. Talk about someone who'd rather be bombing a country watching football.

I agree, Doohickie.

I am not ashamed of my country, because a country is its people first.

Our government brings great shame upon itself, though.

Is it really the best idea to have Cheney as a pallbearer? Although the term "honorary pallbearer" may imply that he won't really be doing any heavy lifting.

Well, at least Bush phoned in his eulogy rather than emailing it.

I'm sure he'd pardon them.

This gets added as reason number 4592380 of why I hate politicians. Old Gerald deserved better.

There will be a big funeral at the National Cathedral on Tuesday, yes, but last night was the offical state funeral. By comparison, Reagan had a massive parade, Air Force flyover, the whole shebang. Here are my pictures. I can't point the finger too much, though, since I didn't go see the Ford procession, either.

Me and my Bloom County upbringing were pretty disturbed by the 24/7 media lovefest when Reagan died.

I guess the Republican's "Eat The Meek" strategy extends even to their own brood.
