Is this equivalent to Garage Band on a Mac? We are, for now, pretty much wedded to PC's, so I am trying to find an equivalent to Garage Band, [More:]the free music recording program that comes with an iBook. This looks close but I am very inexperienced with recording if it does not include rolling tape.

Thanks for any advice, opinions, snarks, whatever.
You could give FL Studio a try. Avoiding Sony software is usually a good idea.

Well coming from a cmonkey, this seems like good advice. I also found this page, which seems helpful.

I've been told by folks who know (i.e., who code for GB at Apple) that the original codebase for GB was Acid. But they've diverged somewhat since then.

A friend of mine who uses Acid, though, says they're still pretty close in terms of interface and functionality and he likes Acid.

I use GB myself, by the way, and I think it's the best product out there in its category. It's not technically free; it's part of iLife, which is bundled with some Apples but is in fact a payware software suite.

acid is pretty good for those "quick and dirty" mixes, but as far as pure functionality goes i prefer ableton live.
