Love for MeFi In the spirit of the season, I just wanted to share a few reasons I love MeFi and all its body parts.[More:]

The Blue: The best of the web. Not the best of the web. Arguing over whether this is the best of the web. Armchair punditry. Good posts. Good double posts. Shitty posts, and especially shitty double posts.

The Grey: What can I say? I adore the flame-outs. I also like to watch natural disasters on TV. But the spirit of "We-Hate-You-Because-You-Suck" is just so beautiful on MeTa. Especially in that thread a few weeks ago where the guy self-linked for a freakin' stress test. (Note: This is not sarcasm. It's just me being a Bad Person.)

The Green: I've just been beaten over the head and had my wallet stolen and also I think my son might be gay and there's blood oozing out of my ass. What should I do? Also, I Know Everything and that is why I answer every question asked. Oh, and I know this question was asked two hours ago but my hamster-naming problem is just slightly different (my hamster has speckles, whereas the other poster's doesn't). I can't figure out which books to read or videos to watch; should I see a therapist?

MeFi evil exists in so many ways, and I have to say that lately I've been enjoying every little bit of it.

/schadenfreude

(Also, this is my first post. Please hope me and be gentle.)
I agree! MeFi is awesome when it's good and awesome when it's bad. This holiday season, I am soo thankful for it.

You should name your hamster Max Doobles Poseidon.

Mefi made meme what I am today: [insert joke here]

Dude. If I ever get a hamster, I am so naming it Max Doobles Poseidon. That is a seriously great name. Hmm. I wonder how my firstborn child would feel if I named him/her/it that?
posted by brina 21 December | 17:42
Would it be a speckled firstborn child?
posted by occhiblu 21 December | 17:44
I think it would suffer enough from the name, don't you? Speckles would make it even worse. Unless they were pink ...

I'm not yet fully convinced of your love of MeFi. I require an anecdote sealing your credibility. Chop chop!
posted by cortex 21 December | 18:28
What sort of anecdote, cortex? Shall I tell you about the time I was sitting out and looking at the stars and thinking they weren't nearly as beautiful as MetaFilter's dear eyes? Or would it be more appropriate to talk of the day MeFi fell ill with scarlet fever and I suddenly knew it was my one true love?

So we have the blue, the grey, and the green. . .what color, brina, would you give to mecha?

Sorta light grey with a tinge of blue, on my screen.

(I just looked for the color in the source code and almost went blind.)

I was more thinking of an embarrassingly detailed anecdote of your first-hand experience with some bit of mefi trivia. User experience. You Had To Be There stuff. The kind of anecdote that someone who wasn't also in love with MeFi wouldn't get anything out of.

I want you to make yourself vulnerable in your display of obsession and affection.

I'm in UR MeFi, snarking on UR AskMe!

I love MeFi too. I'd really like to take all three out, Blue, Grey and Green, get them all really drunk and listen to some of their war stories.

danf, MeCha is ivory with a tinge of rose blush on my screen (but my screen has a bluish tint to it that shouldn't be there).

I'll never forget/forgive the first time the longboat pulled up.

I once wrote out an embarassing sickly sweet account of the way I felt about MeFi, posted it to a MeTa thread (I thought it was one of Miguel's, but can't find it) and have never been able to find it again.

You'll just have to trust me that it's out there somewhere.

Oh I am so finding it.

I love this thread!

cortex: Making myself vulnerable, eh? Not that I have any reason to do so, but here 'tis.

In September I stupidly posted a hypothetical question to the green, which jessamyn rightly deleted. Then I posted a question about the deletion on MeTa. Then I found myself completely and tragically humiliated until someone told me I was a special snowflake.

Also, if anyone ever mentions mushroom identification, I snarf like crazy.

danf: I agree that MeCha is ivory, though mine is a grey-ish ivory.

I love these threads.

... and then, one time on MeCha, I accidentally linked to my deleted AskMe instead of to my MetaTalk post. That made me very vulnerable indeed.

MeFi+MeCha=best of the internets

Thank you for this post. I love MeFi too. Why? Because I learn soooo much from it -- not just the interesting oddities and facts and subcultures and curiousities, but I've also learned about how to better debate, how to humbly admit when I'm beaten, how to gain confidence to speak when there is something important and true to say, and how to respect people while still disagreeing with them. Disagreeing perhaps while gradually reducing disagreement and moving toward a statement that can be accepted in common.

And MeCha too. Why? 'Cause it's less serious, more caring, more whimsical, more day-to-day.

It is 3 a.m. and I am still awake because the world is a giant lemon. But while I'm being gushy -- for I will awake tomorrow as surly as ever -- I must wonder why I never came to MeCha before. People here are all nice and cuddly, and no one has yet told me to grow a pair of balls.

It would be very difficult for me to grow balls, anyway. Most women can't do that, you know.

If I don't go to bed now, I am going to turn into a toadstool.

Metafilter: im in ur meta flamin ur n00bz.
Metafilter: I come here for the snarks.
AskMeFi: I'm smarter than that other guy.

I like MeFi, but unfortunately, it seems that I will never get the chance to tell it to her in person :( All I can do is pretend that I don't really like her at all.
