So apparently "laid off" does not mean what I think it means. [More:]They fired me this past July, except that didn't really take because they never followed through, then they put me on reduced hours a month later, but that didn't take either because they never followed through, then they laid me off in November, and now... they are offering me a part-time job. WTF? I am so confused.
This all sounds eerily familiar...

This happened to neighbours of my parents - they laid off the husband after years of loyal service, but still wanted him to help them out whenever they wanted. My dad is a tribunal judge, so knows about employment law. Employers can't have this both ways - you're either laid off or not; they either have a job for you, or they don't. One or the other, black or white. Some kind of lawyer might be in order, if you're so willing.

Occhi, you know by now not to expect them to do anything logically, right?

Employers these days don't have any sense of what's right or real. Most of them know now that they can use their at-will power to decrease hours, blow off benefits and hire little shits like me to do their grunt work for cheap.

I wish you all the strength you could ever need right now. I'm behind you, we're behind you, and The Man Can Suck It.

It actually, upon further information, seems to be that they want to employ me on on a contract basis for a few months, which is kinda something we had talked about, but want it more structured than I was expecting -- "freelance" was the original word, now it's suddenly X hours a week.

This whole thing has been so ridiculously ... um, well, ridiculous that it's starting to make my head hurt.

These people so don't deserve you.

Have I mentioned how glad I am that I did go back to school when I did, rather than waiting around relying on this company to allow me to save up money first? Knowing that there's a total endpoint to this makes it much easier to deal with.

Are you going to take the part-time offer?

I haven't decided.

I'm kinda thinking yes... It'll give me time to look for other full-time work, and they're actually offering a bit more money than I was expecting (though they're also expecting more hours).

Though I am going to give it overnight to think about it, in case major objections do arise.

The lack of health insurance being one of them...

Accept the job, and then don't go in. If they ask you why you didn't show up, tell them that there's some additional paperwork that has to be processed first, and you'll let them know.
