A holiday reminder. In the spirit of the season, I have a few things I want to say...[More:]

Don't sweat the small stuff. Seriously. It's a lame, clichéd saying, but it's completely true and IMO really important. Life is too short to get worked up about every little thing; I find that I'm much more relaxed when I just let things go. Don't be a pushover, but don't turn everything into a big deal either. Relax. Choose your battles.

Look around you. Appreciate. There are people and animals who love you. Make sure they know you love them back. Make it a point not to take what you have for granted.
That's a nice reminder mike. I agree with what mike has said.

That is solid advice and a lovely thought, mike. Unfortunately, my hormones are still urging me to set fire to people. (They keep effing with my Christmas!!! They must pay!!!) Hopefully that will stop soon and I can be a kinder, gentler rossi in 2007.

I've been busy writing holiday cards, wrapping up loose ends from too many weeks ago, and relishing everything in my life. You lovely MeChas haven't been forgotten & are loved by the Chewitude.

(Speaking of Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, did you see the guy who wrote it died last week? He was 45 and he had a heart attack....guess he was sweating the small stuff, after all).

I'd gladly take everyone's small stuff. Just put it all in a pile right here.

Thanks, Mike!

My wife's PhD advisor gave her a copy of that book, complete with pithy inscription and date inside the cover. This was right before she suggested we abort our first born.

Actually the better advice is simply 'Don't Sweat.' Because then you'll explode into a toxic cloud around age 38, thus rendering all your worries moot.

It should be noted, I am in no way endorsing the book. I've never even read it. But the title is a good rule of thumb. For me anyway.

So you have a problem with thumb sweat?

I've heard this advice as a two-parter:

1) Don't sweat the small stuff.
2) It's all small stuff.

posted by StickyCarpet 18 December | 15:05
StickyCarpet, I've heard that too, and I couldn't disagree with it more. There are things that most certainly are not small; e.g., a death or serious illness of someone close, or losing a job, or the end of a relationship, or any number of decidedly big things. That's what I meant by "choose your battles". Determine which things are small things, and let them go. Reserve your energy for the things that really matter.

This post actually made my morning about 300% better than it otherwise would have been. Merci.

*heart melts*

I'm so glad, occhi. What a nice thing to say. I'm beaming.

Awww. No, really. Minor puff of random anger that I was on the verge of spinning into something major -- just went away.

Plus I had a cat sleeping on my lap when I read it, so the animal tie-in helped.

Don't smaell the sweat stuff.

That's an awesome reminder, mike. Especially not taking people for granted, something I find myself doing from time to time despite my efforts not to. People and animals who love us are way too precious to take for granted.

Where's the button to mark mike's post as a favourite?

Well timed, Mike. Time to slow down and just enjoy this time of year. I'd like to chime in that all of you have made this a great site to visit, just about the only site I have time for. I'm glad I "met" all of you.

:there was a time where I wrote letters to all my close friends, highlighting times spent together and telling them all how much they meant to me. I got back worried letters - they all thought I had a terminal illness and was trying to say goodbye!:

That caused a coffee spew, redvixen.

It's like when the bank doesn't want to take your money, or your job doesn't want you to work. You love out to your friends and they get all concerned.

Happy Holidays, metachatters, esp. admins.
