Please welcome me to the future: share your favorite traveling music! My friends just got me one of these just in time for my cross-country trip. Woo hoo!
I always go for the old school 'road epic' songs myself: Blackfoot's 'Highway Song' Thin Lizzy's 'Cowboy Song,' like that.

I like Kristin Hersh on planes. Or anyone else appropriately wistful and airy. Like Emiliana Torrini or Joni Mitchell. That makes me feel like I'm in a movie and I've just left behind the love of my life / high-paying career / appropriately supportive but baffled family in order to pursue a new life, and while it may not make rational sense, I just know it's something I gotta do and though it will be hard, and there will be heartbreak, I know that it's pain and struggle I must experience myself in order to truly live.

I may have listened to entirely too much Joni Mitchell as a teenager...

I keep a couple of speeches, lectures, and the odd sermon on mine.

I'm also loving Regina Specktor, although once again I seem to be the last person to hear about her.

this is what most trips start out with. . .and makes a pretty groovy (and pdxy) beginning to a journey.

I've never heard of her either, but I stopped keeping up a while ago.

I believe that Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville was voted best road trip album somewhere, sometime. But maybe that's more of a social thing.

When driving alone between Wisconsin and Illinois I got a lot of mileage out of Melissa Etheridge, especially Never Enough.

Ha! I was just going to start a thread about Regina Specktor to see if she is as good as they say. Also, whenever I see a picture of her, I think she looks like Specklet with long hair (and I think she is quite lovely so I hope you take that as a compliment).

Don't feel like dancin' by the Scissor Sisters will make you feel like dancin'!

You can hear it here if you want to check it out before downloading.

I really like Regina Specktor, but I never listen to her CD beacuse it's so all over the place genre-wise.

I suppose putting it on an iPod would solve this problem, but I am also a little resitant to new technology and therefore still think in terms of "albums." Specktor's individual songs are great, though.

I usually listen to Beirut at least once during my plane trips.

Every good road trip starts out with something from that little 'ol band from Texas. Pop in some old skool Doobies, to keep you runnin', and then fade in some Allman Brothers Band. Then, when you're out of town, set a theme with some older Pat Metheny.

Oh, wait. You're flyin'. With a teeny mp3 player. Well, geography bein' what it is, good on ya for makin' the holiday trip. But sorry, kid, can't think of anything to help make a tin can pleasant.

Me, I drink all they'll gimme, and 'cuss that they won't let me bring my own.

since you have limited space on that shuffle, here is a tasty one that may have you squirming in your plane seat, if that is your idea of a good time.
