Maxine Sullivan. Yesterday I picked up a bargain-basement 3-CD pack called ‘Jazz Divas’ featuring performances from (mostly) the late ’30s and early ’40s. Most of the names were familar to me: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Anita O’Day… Maxine Sullivan’s, however was not, but, what a great voice… If you like that sort of thing, then you should watch her sing Ace in The Hole and I Can’t Get Started (two 1958 perfomances on youtube).
Also, here are some recordings (ca. 1941) of Maxine singing Night and Day and My Ideal.
