AskMeCha: What's the best way to get the funk out? (i.e., My hands smell funny -- help!) I accidentally spilled scented candle wax on my desk, and while cleaning it up, I got some on my hands. Now my allergies are going crazy. I've tried washing with soap and water, but it doesn't seem to be working. Suggestions? (I'm dyin' over here!)
Something with alcohol should help. (Rubbing alcohol. Though maybe a martini would make you care less.)

Rub olive oil all over your hands. Rinse off. It should work.

Tomato juice or vinegar are good bets.

I think you need something citrus-based to cut the scented oil from the wax... Goo Gone or something like that.

OOh! I work in a bookstore, so I've got Goo Gone out the wazoo! Unfortunately, I find the citrus smell to be just as objectionable! Still, it's probably worth a try. The martini cure sounds pretty good, as well. Perhaps this crisis calls for an extended lunch break...

Yeah, Goo Gone would just be substituting one nast chemical smell for another. My vote is with the olive oil. And the martini.

Update: Rubbing alcohol did the trick. Thanks, occhiblu! And thanks to the rest of you bunnies for your suggestions. I plan on trying them all at a later date, as circumstances (and my various bodily stenches) dictate.

I have a shea butter&coffee grind soap that gets the funk out after handling fish, garlic or anything smelly in the kitchen. So perhaps coffee grinds and soap will do it?

There was an article on Salon a while back (probably around last Christmas) about some super odor-removing kitchen soap that everyone wanted; I think it was from a gardening store? I keep meaning to try to find it. (The article and the soap. Though I do feel that my hands constantly smelling of garlic has become part of my charm.)

Coffee beans are supposed to be good for sniffing when testing perfumes, to "reset" your nose. Sephora had a tumbler full of them in front of their perfumes when I was there last time. It was nice to switch between the scents -- the combo of perfume and coffee made me feel like I was in Rome, surrounded by well-dressed women in heels and furs.

For onion and garlic smells, rubbing your hand over a stainless steel knife, under running water, is supposed to work. (They even sell hunks of stainless steel in the kitchen gadget aisle for people who are too dumb just to use a knife.) Don't know why it wouldn't work for other things too.

I've tried that (though I tend to use a spoon), and it doesn't seem to get rid of all of it, at least for garlic.

It may also be that I'm congenitally unable to go through an entire day without cooking something that has garlic in it, so I'm just constantly restinking myself.

Try squeezing a lemon over your hands, rubbing vigorously, then rinsing. Another tip: if your kitchen has a stainless-steel sink, rub your hands on the steel surface.
