14 degrees Farenheit is -10 Centigrade and my furnace is not working. The electric blanket is, so I will probably survive. (the downstairs neighbors have heat, so even my pipes are pretty safe.) But it's jeezly cold. Hot water bottle in bed comin right up.
that's horrible! getting it fixed tomorrow, I hope?

Cats come in handy in situations like that. I hope it gets sorted out soon.

Aw theora -- my furnace is working. If it's a protracted problem, come on over!

I spent two winters in Chicago in a second floor apartment (Roscoe Street, next to Clark) that was so cold that I could see my breath. It turns out that the asshole upstairs from us had punched giant holes in the ducts so that he got all of our heat. That asshole was our landlord's brother. He also owned (still owns?) Student Movers moving company.
Once we found out abou this, we told our landlord and then lived rent free for four months. The landlord finally told us to leave, but we trashed the apartment pretty badly before we left just to even the score.
That's what I loved about Chicago. No cops ever had to be involved, and if they did, well it was just better to let a blood feud happen.

This is why I moved away from winter. I hope tomorrow brings a repairman. Either that or cut a hole in your floor and let your neighbor's heat warm your place too!

The trouble with cats, arse_hat, is that, in a situation where they know you need them to cuddle up to you, they'll just sit across the room giving you that 'you don't own me' look and ignoring every attempt to make them sit on your lap.

The nice plumber came and fixed it, and all is well. The pilot light was clogged. Now basking in 70 degrees F to make up for it.

In case anyone reads this..I once lived in a great apartment over a Chinese restaurant. There was only one other apartment above mine, which held a single mom and her (gulp) six kids in ages from 16 to 8 months. She had the controls to the heat for the both of us. Well, she must have had it cranked to 90 degrees, 'cause it was winter and we had our windows wide open, it was so hot!
The restaurant went through several different managers (the lady who owned the building allowed friends to operate it). They closed it down once between operators, but when they did, they shut the heat to the whole building. To remedy this, they snaked one of those metal cables from the furnace downstairs, up my back stairs, and taped it in one of my outlets!!!!! Needless to say, this made us very nervous. Luckily we bought a house shortly after and moved. This same building burned down five years later. Hmmmmmm.

P.S. The landlady, while very nice, was big on fixing things with bubble gum and duct tape.
