Upper GI endoscopy experiences? I have to have an esophagogastroduodenoscopy on Tuesday to look for possible ulcers or gall bladder problems. Anyone had one? What should I expect?[More:]

I'm finding myself rather worried about this whole thing. It's not the procedure so much; I think it's more that I'm freaking out about what they'll find and I'm feeling as if there is no end to my stomach problems* and I'm just overwhelmed and frustrated and I feel helpless and it's making me speak in run-on sentences. I went to the gastroenterologist yesterday, so I'm finally doing something about it rather than continuing to allow myself to suffer. Shouldn't that make me feel better? Why do I feel worse?

* Long story. Six years ago, I was having major stomach problems and vomiting daily and lost a ton of weight. Eventually (after a bunch of doctors and even a psychiatrist) figured out that it was just acid reflux, and reflux medication took care of the problem lickety split! Gained 30+ pounds in 4 months. Within the last 5-6 months, my symptoms have started to come back despite the medication; not the vomiting, thankfully, but the general nausea, loss of appetite, gagging, and difficulty swallowing. I never know when I sit down to a meal if I'll be able to finish it or eat at all. It has taken all the joy out of eating and made me generally miserable. Whee!
Heh. Two medical procedure posts in a row.

That sucks! Good for you for being proactive. You feel worse because you're scared of what they'll find. I'll be thinking about you.

Taken the joy out of eating!? Now, that's just not fair. Sorry, dude.

No experience personally, but the old guy's in my family say the newer procedure is a piece of cake.

The shittiest part about all of this? I haven't lost any weight! That doesn't seem fair when there are sometimes entire days when I can't eat anything that requires more chewing than a banana.

Aw, man, sorry to hear about the miserable eating situation. Boo!

My partner's had the procedure a couple of times, for acid reflux/esophagus issues, and he says there's nothing to it.

Think positive: if they DO find something, then you can fix it and get this over with. Until then, you're left just suffering and wondering like you have been, and you already KNOW that sucks.

Wow, I'm surprised jonmc's joke post that was right above mine was deleted. That doesn't seem very mecha-like. I was in the middle of writing a comment defending him to sasshat, and I still want it to be said, so here goes:

"Oh, sass, I'd cut him a break here. He was just continuing the theme of previous posts with a joke post, as so often happens here at Mecha. I don't think he was passing any judgement on gender reassignment or anything like that. Just making a joke. And it made me laugh, when I've been freaking out for the past 24 hours, so I appreciated it."

I think they can give you some kind of short-acting paralytic to make it go smoothly if you tend to gag.

I wondered where jonmc's post had gone.

My ex-husband had an endoscopy a few years ago. He was bricking it before he went in, but it was really, really quick. He said it wasn't something he'd ever want to do again, but was nowhere near as bad as he thought it'd be.

They kept us waiting so long (damn NHS!) that by the time they got to him as the last patient, it was too late to give him something to relax him, because that takes half an hour to kick in and they all wanted to go home.

Thankfully I'm the first appointment of the day, jan. I would like to personally thank the person who cancelled for his or her spot. First appointment is the best!

I thought jonmc's was funny, too. I was trying to come up with a jokey reply, but I had nothing.

I definitely wasn't. What transsexuals have to go through must be incredibly difficult, and I don't want to minimmize that, so I can understand why it was deleted and I won't make a fuss about it. But in the context of known mecha personalities and the medical procedure threads made it mildly funny. and I like sasshat and her contributions so I'm not offended.

FWIW, the original post was "Decapitation experiences. On Sunday I will be executed for treason to the Queen. What can I expect?"

Which in retrospect would've been funnier.

But, I'm ok with it. End of story.

my surgery was early, too. as they were prepping they were discussing what they were going to get for lunch. I found that comforting.

Good luck, mikey boy! I hope they find something minor, fix it up fast and get you back in prime form in no time.

I deleted it. Anyone got any questions, then my email is in my profile. I don't really want to scupper mike9322's post because of something that happened in a different post.

On the Gall Stone thing. Ouchy. They were talking about this on the dawn and drew show recently. I can't find the comment in question so can't point you towards a link but a guy was saying that he had the Acid Reflux and it led to Gall Bladder problems. He was annoyed because the acid reflux stuff should have given away that it was a gall bladder problem but by the time they got to that it was too late. Not what you want to hear I guess. Good Luck.

Sorry for bringing it up here, seanyboy. I was just surprised.

The doc said he'd be very surprised if it was ulcers, since I'm taking Protonix for the reflux, and that is supposed to prevent ulcers. And what he is saying about the gall bladder makes sense; if it isn't working properly, the nausea I'm feeling may be my body's way of saying "hey, ain't no way I'm digesting that, so keep it outta here, KTHXBYE".

I'm sending good, reassuring thoughts your way, sweetie.

I really hope in light of your problems that your GI guy is checking you for H. pylori infection, but, surprisingly, it's still not a routine part of many GI workups. Ask. Be sure to ask.

It's easy to get rid of helicobacter with a course of simple oral anti-biotics, but if you don't know you have it, you won't be treated. It took a 100 years for Western medicine to find this common pathogen, and recognize that in millions of cases of upper GI problems, they'd been treating patient symptoms, based on bad theories of disease, and a widely held assumption that bacteria could not exist in the acid conditions of the stomach, much less colonize the stomach wall itself.

Ask.
