I used to perform with the Gahnahian Drum Ensemble at Brown University, (second gong, nothing too fancy) and that is some utterly deep music.

The leader would show us how some songs are based around a pattern that is not being played, and imagining that pattern in your head made for musical jokes and tricks with what was being played.

I know exactly how you feel. Though I've now been here long enough that I think the thing has turned over... if I ever go back to the U.S. (unlikely), I'll be homesick for Greece. Of course, all the nasty politics in the U.S., and the rise of fundamentalism, plus Katrina, make it a lot easier not to be homesick. The home I would be sick for doesn't even exist anymore.
