"The ADS was developed in complete secrecy for 10 years at a cost of $40 million. Its existence was revealed in 2001 by news reports, but most details of ADS human testing remain classified. There has been no independent checking of the military's claims." Funny ol' world.
Ugh. This strikes me as an evil, evil invention for a couple of reasons.

1) If it causes excruciating pain but leaves no marks, it's the perfect torture device. Since our current govt. has shown they're not above using (or outsourcing) torture, this disturbs me greatly.

2) "Non-lethal" weapons are almost always abused by the military and police, because they feel they can use them on citizens with impunity. Look at how tasers went from being a way to "subdue violent offenders" to being a way for a cop to say "do what I say or I'll zap you."

Yeah, but at only $40 million in development costs, it is bargain basement!

With regard to PR concerns, just give it a nice innocuous name like the "Tingle Ray" and most people won't bat an eyelash.

Of course, if certain folks do make a stink about it, the government can always turn the "Tingle Ray" on them. That should shut 'em right up.

Horrifying.

I hadn't thought of that!
*shhhh!* Evidently masochists are an untapped market for large corporations. Be quiet or they'll catch on.

Then again, there'll be less lab mice (and dogs and cats and monkeys and everything else, in the case of research labs like Huntingdon Life Sciences--"We put the torturous Death back in Life!") and more humans. The bulk of animal research doesn't even apply to human physiology anyway. The gov't would love that. My first poli sci class taught me the benefits of war as seen by the gov't, one of which is population control.

/way off topic. No, wait, not off topic, considering this thread is about gov't and things like "most details of ADS human testing remain classified."
