Hi Neigbor! Have a Gansett! [More:]We were watching some old Red Sox newsreel footage and got excited watching some little spots for this regional beer, Narragansett Lager. Of course it doesn't exist any more! So we looked it up...and LO the brand had fallen in the early 80s to competition from Anhauser Busch and their corporate brethren, and suffered from insuffient support from owner Falstaff brewery, but has been REVIVED by a young upstart visionary. Yay little regional brands! Yay American variety!
I like Session. It may not actually be old school, but it sure looks like it!

This summer, I was thrilled to discover the active local brewery culture of Wisconsin via Stevens Point Brewery (100+ years, going strong, and tasty!)

And LT has deepened my appreciation of Smuttynose beers -- not only the best available locally, but some of the best beer on a national level, he avers. And we've both fallen under the spell of SeaDog's blueberry ale.

He didn't know about Magic Hat -- another great New England brew. The guy reviving the retro 'Gansett Lager brand apparently got a lot of his chops at Magic Hat. New England has good beer chops, for sure.

What's your best local brew?

Podey! You are the hippest!

Oh man, I'd forgotten about Magic Hat!

Heh, thanks Miko!

My favourite beer EVAR is from my hometown in NZ. Emerson's Brewery makes wonderful beers - I like them all. But my absolute favourite is Bookbinder, an English style ale. It's only 3.7% as well, so you can drink it all day and all night and not get too drunk.

mmm...Magic Hat. Undoubtedly the best thing about the Northeast (besides all you bunnies, of course!)

Of course, I've been drinking a lot of Shiner beers. I'm currently partial to Shiner 96.

Walkerville, my neighborhood brew. A great lager.

Here in Jax, this Bud's for you.

What? Don't like our beer? Try our coffee.

We finished off a keg of Manny's this weekend. And when I can't get that, I'm partial to Mac & Jack's African Amber, Fat Tire and Nightwatch.

Plus, my best friend brews about 50-60 gallons of various beers a year...WHOOT!

Don't miss Berkshire Brewing Company Steel Rail Pale ale.

I like the magic hat number 8, or whatever the fuck it's called, with the apricots, that's a good hippie beer, although more than six and I start to feel the need for a scalding hot shower, some meatloaf, a crewcut and putting the boot to some dude with a rainbow tam. I'm on record as generally not liking most microbrews (Don't put an assload of hops and some random fruit in a beer and wave a wand over it and call it done America's brewers, and fuck off with the pumpkins alltogether, I had some free pumpkin beer last week and I'm still not recovered) I won't belabor the point, but recently, as Jmc can attest I've been known to order a Brooklyn Lager, that is a decent - but once again TOO MUCH HOPS - local beer.

Here's what I like, Guiness and lots of it and as many free ones as possible and dry ass lagers. Whenever I get to a bar with Jever on tap I heave a sigh of relief. Can anyone suggest a good American microbrew that tastes like Jever, a very, I mean incredibly, dry lager, bitter as fuck?

I'm a proud lager lout.

(Narry is decent, I'm glad it's back)

But not hops heavy bitter, not just hops, dry, not fruity and... herbal? I add this before I am corrected by those who think hops is the only bittering agent available to beer.

I'd also like to say that I love calling people "neighbor."

Man, I miss the Steel Rail Pale Ale.

This is our local brewery. They have several varieties of beer my favourite being the cran-apple cider. Their food is also pretty damned tasty. There is many a day where I crave their Horn O'Plenty, which is a platter of deep fried goodies. And, maybe, on several occasions, I have stolen their BBQ sauce for my personal consumption. Its just that yummy.

Narragannsett? New Hampshirites. In Vermont, they drink Genessee, dammit.

It's only 3.7% as well, so you can drink it all day and all night and not get too drunk.

I've read this at least a dozen times and it still doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

3.7% ABV, eamondaly. And maybe I exaggerated how much of it you can drink.
posted by gaspode 30 October | 13:23
No, I understand the numbers; I just don't understand the concept. Drinking not to get drunk?
posted by eamondaly 30 October | 15:15
heh! I overlooked that! But it's so tasty and delicious... and it's hard to drink when you've fallen off your chair.
posted by gaspode 30 October | 15:17
It's brewed in Rochester, NY by High Falls Brewing (formerly Genesee). Genesee was saved primarily by contract brewing (Sam Adams in particular) and it's good to see them reviving another regional brew.
