1965 was the year it became illegal for a drill instructor to actually hit a recruit according to a Vietnam Vet I met in a bar once. That kinda squares with my dad (drafted in '66) telling me that Basic Training wasn't all that bad: "I'm from New York City, son, I've had obscenities yelled at me my whole life."

US Marine Corps boot camp. Been there, done that, wore the t-shirt. Camp Pendleton always got the best hashish.
