A new show opening soon on Broadway based on the play Spring Awakening. Music by Duncan Sheik. It got rave reviews off Broadway, and is working the internet marketing angle pretty well. Here's a "music video" of one of the numbers. I think it just might be a smash.
The song, as you can probably tell, is about sex.

And unlike the shows you see on TV, these teens are played by ACTUAL TEENS (well, most of them, anyway; the leads are about my age).

OK, OK, I'm the only Broadway fan here.

Sorry, my tastes run from straight plays right over to opera. I don't much like musical theater (I've tried) and that's no reflection on anyone but me.

Though I do have plans to write a libretto based on the life of Hans Holbein the Younger.

But did you watch the video?

It could change your opinion! It could change your life!

I can't because of the computer I'm on. I can't really watch anyone's videos or enjoy anyone's music. And most of the time I can't even post on mecha because I'm surfing via Crackberry.

But I like to show support for other people's tastes/art/muses because it's all so individual.

There's so much I wish I could do.

(On preview, it's less an opinion than a taste... I've wrestled with this a lot, and while I might indeed find that I like this particular piece, I'll always consider the likes of Phantom and Les Miz insipid and hokey. But if I can watch it, I will).

And by naming those two I don't mean specifically those two. I've listened to quite a few musicals and it's the way they're sung as well as the way they're composed, and I can't put my finger right on it. Something about the timbre of voices trained for this kind of music, something about the way pieces are put together, perhaps my distaste comes from the musical influences and tradition the composers are following. I don't know what it is, honestly. But my saying I don't much like musical theater doesn't mean I haven't given it a lot of thought.

Now if they had a musical about Charles Ives, with music by Charles Ives, I'd see that in a New York second. Even if it was only a staging of The Unanswered Question paralleling Ives' own life and ending in a cry for understanding. Yeah. I'd watch that.

Yes, Twyla Tharp that shit up! Experience the sorrow of "From Hanover Square North, at the End of a Tragic Day, the Voice of the People Again Arose." Take a journey through the life of the mind in "Central Park After Dark." Celebrate a nation and her people in "Variations on America."

Me, I'm waiting for "Silent Spring" the musical.

I'm also pretty sure that Duncan Sheik must appear in the Homeland Security no-fly list, with a name like that
