Etiquette Question: At a Department Meeting, is it bad form to bring a newspaper and read the classifieds?
(well, the Department hired a new head-who's last name ends in "uck," so I call him "----uck The Muckety-Muck," who's taking until December to "decide what to do," with the company, so everythings in limbo, but we already know they don't want us. I've been half-assing it for weeks and they haven't complained. I dunno what's going on. But I've more or less resigned myself to the fact that I'll probably be doing work like this till the day I die)
Also, my cubie Anisha is simultaneously talking on the phone and thumbing away furiously at her Sidekick. That's multitasking. Homegirl needs to be working for the space program.
You can always become a teacher like me. : ) It only makes me feel like shooting myself about twice a week. (That's down considerably from any previous job I've had.)
And you have many skills, if I do say so myself... it's just a matter of finding the right "wessel" for them... (feel free to kick me in the shins later if I'm bein' too "chipper").
jonmc, I hope you will pardon me saying this, since you don't know me at all (I've been a lurker here for a while and just got an account), but it makes me sad whenever you say things about being trapped in bad jobs because you don't have skills. I'm a total stranger on the internet, and your intelligence and clarity of expression are quite evident to me. I think you underestimate yourself and your options for success.

Well, if there's any paid openings for wiseassery, I'd be sure to apply, but a slightly bigger than average vocabulary and fast keyboard fingers (along with two bucks) will get you on the subway.
They're holding on to the employees forever because they hope everyone will leave for other jobs, so that they don't have to pay them layoff settlements. Companies do stuff like this all the time.
TPS, you aren't kidding. Right now my company is closing three stores, two of which are located close together. Instead of any rational decisions regarding early retirements, or even lay offs, they are trying to get as many people to quit as possible. They are transferring them as far as 70 miles one way from home. While I am safe right now, with too many years in, if the remaining stores are forced to house too many expensive full-timers, they won't turn a profit, and it could lead to more closings. Vicious circle. The union is doing it's damndest (what a surprise), but the company doesn't give a rat's behind about it's employees.
