I think I might be old. I'm terribly excited that a new teeny grocery just opened in my backyard.
I can't wait to run out of something! It's only 10k sq ft but it has a nice deli and meat/fish counter and veggies. And he partnered up with a local fair trade coffee dude and other local produce peeps. Cool! I've always wanted a corner store to walk to. :D
I've got a convenience store that sells bread, eggs, and dairy stuff within easy walking distance (all of the stuff is outrageously marked-up, of course).
I would kill for a locally run small grocery store. It was great during the summer when the farmer's market was going. (And the thing is - the farmer's market here consists of 5-8 booths. You get great produce and great stories from the people running the booths though.)
Most of the grocery stores we have here are 40k sq. ft. or bigger! There is another teeny grocery (probably about 5k sq. ft.) a couple of blocks over that specializes in Italian foods: lots of pastas, fresh canolis, meats, cheeses, chocolates and a nice little wine cellar. But they haven't done very well - not sure if it is mismanaged or what the deal is.
When we went to Vermont a couple of years ago, I loved those corner groceries they had up there and wished we had them here. Like people knew you when you came in & asked about your Mom and such. Fluffy I bet those were some great stories!
