CANADIANS:→[More:] how much vacation time does your average white collar worker typically recieve as part of their full time benefits package? Does that include sick days?
We were just talking about this at dinner last night.
My wife gets 4 weeks (20 days) vacation, 3 "personal" days and 6 sick days.
She's been at the company for about 5 years.
Of the friends we were talking about it with, the husband has just moved here from Italy and is working for the Canadian office of his Italian company and is back down to 10 vacation days a year...he got something crazy like 30 days in Italy.
Minumum for new employees is 2 weeks (10 days) vacation. There are also 9 to 11 stat holidays depending on what province you are in. Personal and sick days vary with employer.
I'm not white collar, but as an entry level employee in the entertainment industry, I get two weeks. Sick days are extra, although my company doesn't have an official amount you can have - so long as you can document it, you can stay home sick (assuming that you stay on top of your work).
Towards the upper end I started at 20 vacation days, 10 sick days and 10 flex/compassion days (family funerals, moving, jury, citizenship, birth of child, etc.) plus five days for plant shutdown. After five years I got another 5 vacation days and at 10 years I'll get 5 more for 30 total.
My wife only gets 2 weeks (10 days) but she'll get 3 after five years.
I've been at the same publishing company for just over six years now.
I started out with 10 vacation days and I don't remeber how many sick and personal days. I now have 16 vacation days, and I'm not sure how many other days, but I think it's 6 personal days that can be used for illness or funerals or whatever.
Any interest in what a white collar union worker makes?
The mister gets three weeks (as do all new employees) and will get four weeks after ten years. Sick time is weird: they get three instances with a max of 20 days at full pay and it gets weirder from there. He gets all the statutory holidays, five bereavement days, one moving day (yes, as in moving from one home to another) and medical leave days (but he doesn't know what the limit to those are).
Other "shops" may have different set-ups even if they're in the same union as the mister.
Interesting. I was curious since I knew that Americans tend to get about 2 weeks and Europeans get about 6 weeks, but I had no idea that Canada fell more on the stingy side of the spectrum.
