In honor of the grilled cheese survey Shirts: do you button top to bottom or bottom to top?
who are the crazy people buttoning bottom to top!?

*waits for them to reveal themselves...*

Bread.

Dude, I'm sane enough to know you top-bottom people are weird!

I go bottom to top, because that's the only way I can be certain that I get the right button in the correct hole.

My family has long made fun of me for wearing improperly buttoned shirts. At some point, I took the initiative to make sure they got put on right.

Top to bottom. I think. These direct questions always make me doubt myself.

also, heh, dano

Top to bottom. Occasionally, though, I go bottom to top.

Are there any influencing factors on when you choose which?

This is kind of embarassing, but I actually wear shirts several times before taking them to the cleaners. Therefore I leave all but the top and bottom buttons buttoned-up when I hang them in the closet. I just slip them over my head like a T-shirt.

button?
posted by jonmc 13 October | 15:22
I can button with one hand, so I start from the top and the bottom simultaneously.
posted by mullacc 13 October | 15:27
occhiblu: I sometimes button from bottom to top because I want to break the habit of buttoning from top to bottom. Other times, it...just...happens.

Second-to-top-to-bottom. Then sometimes top, but hardly ever, because mine isn't really the necktie-wearing kind of life.

(Example: My employer decided to make today a casual day. In honor of it being Friday the 13th.)

I generally start from the middle.

mullacc: you have slipped up and identified yourself as a cyborg sent from the future to "terminate" t-shirts. I bow before your buttoning prowess and point out that I could be useful in rounding up these t-shirt wearers and forcing them to work in your button mines.

I don't actually even own any shirts with buttons. I zip my jacket up from the bottom, though, IIRC.
posted by cmonkey 13 October | 15:42
I go both ways. Just depends on my mood that day.

Top to bottom, but occasionally I mis-button.

All this top and bottom talk is making me feel dirty.

Top to bottom. Gravity is your friend!

Wow...I read the question and clicked into the thread thinking, "Surely there's no one in the entire world who buttons top-to-bottom. That's just WRONG." But I guess I'm one of the weird ones after all. This question is right up there with "How do you rinse out your mouth after brushing your teeth?" and "When you poo, do you wipe sitting down or standing up?"

Also, hi there, bunnies! I'm new, but I've been on MeFi for years and lurked here occasionally.

(Hi, pickles! Great user name! It suddenly reminded me of a fairy tale I once wrote in third grade about a pickle princess. She was quite striking, with her pink cone hat.)

Like TPS, I too start in the middle, then the button below, then the button above, usually. Sometimes when I feel like being adventurous I button the top button and then the bottom button. I always wear tees or something under my buton ups, so I never button all the buttons. I ALWAYS leave the last bottom button (or 2) undone.

And pickles, welcome and you need to get back into item's grilled cheese sandwich right now!!!

Argh - I actually had to put a shirt on to work out how I do the things up. I usually just undo the first 3 or 4 buttons and slide the shirt on/off, and I go bottom to top, such as it is.

You people are just so strange. . .*shudder*.
posted by danf 13 October | 17:42
Depends.
Work Shirt: Top to bottom, so I don't mis-button.
Play shirt: Middle button down, then up. I usually only button one or two buttons if it's some sort of over-shirt.
posted by muddgirl 13 October | 17:44
I button top to bottom and then discover (usually at work) that I'm about 2 buttons off. Then I re-do it bottom to top.
posted by small_ruminant 13 October | 17:46
bottom to top. i always mess it up if i start from the top. always.
posted by syntax 13 October | 17:54
Start in the middle. Thank god I'm not the only one. ;-)

Top to bottom; any other way is freakish. Except for pi's way; I do that sometimes, too.
posted by deborah 13 October | 18:37
Top to bottom. Although if it's a polo-type shirt (which is what I wear to work 99% of the time), I don't button it at all.
posted by BoringPostcards 13 October | 18:58
I start in the middle too - secure the strategic bits first.
posted by casarkos 13 October | 22:23
I manage to button my own shirts. I do this at least five days every week. I know I don't get funny looks at work or anything. But for the life of me, I can't remember which direction I do it in when you ask me.

Bottom to top. It's bizarre to me to read people actually arguing that top to bottom is better.

If you start at the bottom, you can line up the sides in such a way that you can see the bottom of both sides clearly, and thus not mis-button. If you start at the top, you can't look directly at what you're doing, so your chances of error are greater.
