There's something inexpressibly sad, yet perpetually cool about extinct sportsteams.
So I take it that the demise of the LA Dodgers, esp at the hands of the Mets, this past week, is not something terribly unwelcome in those parts. .
*smile*. . .
When I went to Shea, I sat by an old guy (even older than moi) from Long Island. I told him I was a long-time Dodger fan. He lit up until I made the mistake and said LOS ANGELES Dodgers. It got considerably chilly after that.
But it was great to see Snider, Furillo, Labine, Demeter, Roseboro, Hodges, Zimmer, all those old Brooklyn guys playing in LA.
Oh, and am I the only person who finds it totally asinine that there isn't a team in Brooklyn right now (bring back the Robins! The Superbas! The Tip-Tops!)? L'ard t'underin' jeezus, if Milwaukee can support a team, surely New York could handle four or five.
Thanks, jon, but I mean major leagues. Wouldn't the idea of a Brooklyn team be just crazy enough to work? (An honest question - I've never been to NY.) Would cost quite a bit in land acquisition, park building and expansion fees, but the returns would be enormous.
Then again, I expect the indemnification that the Yanks and Mets would demand would be prohibitive. Ah well, still fun to imagine.
...or we could just have two teams named Dodgers. Why not? We used to have two different CFL teams with the same name (well, it was Roughriders and Rough Riders, but you get my drift). And how about all those English football/soccer teams named United? And U.S. college teams named Wildcats?
And I was just out raking leaves in my Brooklyn Dodgers cap, so that brings it all full circle.
