I had a dream last night that I had an irridescent kitten that was all shimmery and red and blue. But it had venomous claws, so you couldn't really pet it.

And now I'm greeted with a b&w image of a cat. Thank you for counterbalancing the too-colorful kitten.

Back in the wee, fragile hours of Metachat's beginnings, it was not clear just what would become of the site. Was it an extra arm of Metafilter, or even an appendix? A squat homumculus, standing nearby? Or an attractive and free-spirited second cousin, hovering just on the moral edge of icky-to-sleep-with?

In those crazy early days, I had made a quip to someone or other about Gaydolf Shitler, and thought myself wildly clever, and was thus still giggling about it. And when I wandered over to the brand-new Metachat signup page, I thought, in a moment of self-doubt, "cortex? How dull, how unstriking. It is no weretables, no Astro Zombie, no Florence Henderson writ precipitative—let's spice things up a bit!"

And thus was born Gayd Olfshitler, who posted a flurry on that first day of MeCha's life and also again now and then over the following year and a half.

But the glove didn't quit, so I felt it was time to a-quit. "cortex" is really home, at this point, and so cortex it is.

And that's the story.
