Movie Moratoriums? So in preparation for tonight's viewing of "Tideland", the boyfriend and I watched "Brazil" last night... [lotsa spoilers, OMG!]→[More:]

I liked it and despite the sad ending, I'd definitely see it again. I can't say the same for Gilliams' "12 Monkeys" because there is nothing I can think of that makes the ending of that movie acceptable to me. The world is doomed to cataclysm and the guy who tried to stop it is actually the one who caused it? No way, man. Game over.

At least with "Brazil" you knew that given the parameters of the world he was living in, the only way Sam Lowry was going to get a happy ending was if he were to retreat into a catatonic dream state. In that world, the State always wins.

But anyway, the fact that I liked "Brazil" and have already seen and liked "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" make me want to revisit "Time Bandits"... except I'm not sure if I want to. (continued)

Not only does TB have a sad ending, it's kinda scary. At least that's what I thought when I was a kid and saw it for the first time. Now that I'm older, I might decide to sit down and watch it again with the bf who really liked it.

The point (or question) is: What movies did you see before and not like are you willing to try again? Which ones aren't you willing to do that for, and why not?

Digression: I watched Platoon again last night. Like always, it made me wonder how I'd fare in combat, and made me think of my Dad and uncles and various other vets I've known and what it must have been like in the 60's to live with the threat of the draft hanging over you. (We have an equally pointless and tragic war going on now, but no draft, which I think is a factor in the lack of a choesive anti-war movement).

Granted it's a little ambiguous but the ending of '12 Monkeys' is more hopeful than you think. Sure, Cole has failed to stop the plague carrier and the plague carrier makes it onto the airplane... but notice who is sitting next to him. It's one of the female scientists from the future who sent Cole back. And this woman introduces herself to the plague carrier by saying "I'm in Insurance."

Meaning: Cole failed, but the woman scientist will stop the plague carrier from carrying out his mission. The World Is Saved!

I recently watched "Lost in La Mancha", which documents Gilliam's struggles to make The Man who Killed Don Quixote. I'm a big Terry Gilliam fan, so this documentary pretty much killed me. Anyway, this post has no other purpose except to pimp the movie. So watch it.

Muddgirl: I highly recommend watching "Tideland" if you're a Gilliam fan. It was amazing and he was a great speaker after the movie was over.

What movies did you see before and not like are you willing to try again? Which ones aren't you willing to do that for, and why not?

I will never attempt to sit through Zoolander again, Jeezuz! But I'd like to see "The Omega Man", "The Lords of Discipline", "Robocop 2" (Heh), & "The Fisher King" to see how they stand up.

Movies I liked the first time and didn't the second -
"Silent Running", "Love Story", "Where the Red Fern Grows"
