Post processing: DOF through Alpha channels (4 different levels of DOF), BW through Lab mode, Sepia tonning, cropping. Here is the original shot. (via)
I do this kind of thing all the time. Do you, matteo? The dofs are the funnest part. She turned a good shot into a great shot with her post processing techniques, in my opinion. And cropping is an art in itself. I'm no purist when it comes to the art of photography, so post processing is half, or more than half, of the fun of it all.
I'm not a purist but, as a film person who only recently switched to digital, I have to say that most of the heavy digital postproduction leaves me cold -- the images just look contrived, less real and more distant
I made a point not to learn how to do much more than what you could do in a basic darkroom -- a reasonable amount of dodging and burning, light levels modification, etc

hi d.!
and of course a good B/w conversion (Iposted last week Greg Gorman's awesome process)
I'd like my digital shots to look, as possible, as not-too-heavily-manipulated film shots.
anything more than that, well, I don't really like . but having said that, more power to those who do
(re: dof. in the linked image, it's simply unnatural -- opening wide your lens wouldn't give that effect, not nearly, it's clearly fake and hence rubs me the wrong way. but I'm old fashioned
Nothing wrong with being old-fashioned, but to me a photograph is like a page of a coloring book, and it's just waiting for me to muck it up and make it my own. I love adjusting this and tempering that, to see what happens.
So you develop your own film? I'm just looking into that now...I need to start doing it, because my holga is costing me 20.00US a week, which is ridiculous. I just bookmarked some sites this morning that explain how to develop b&w - I thought I would start from there.
I've done that for years, it's easy, you just need a tank and some Xtol (or others, I like Xtol) and a lightproof room (bathroom)?
but then you're stuck with the contact-sheet problem. try getting a used scanner and scan those negs yourself. Canon's flatbeds are scary cheap and USB-powered
