Ask Mecha: Photo Credit? So I'm sending out press releases & I'm including pictures I took. Do I append a photo credit and if so, how do I phrase that?[More:]Usually, what I do is send an image attached to the press release (all of this is done via email) and at the end of the message I add a line that says "Attached image is "Toy Rabbit Attacking Goat With Shears" or something exciting like that, you know, like "Kids in Museum Admiring Gemstones" or "Quartz Sample" and then I don't say anything but perhaps I should say something such as Photo credit myname or should it be Photo By myname or is there some other line I should add? In other words, what do you say if it's your photo? I never ran into this problem at the art museums, because there the image citations were all nice and clear, not to mention gone over by curators endlessly and stuff like where the comma goes, which part is in italics and how you do the dimensions was set in stone that could not be tampered with.
mgl, I don't know what you should do about that, to be honest. Did you take the photos as part of your job, or are you just doing them a favor? If the former, I would probably just put photo copyright 2006 THEMUSEUM, but if it's something extra that you are doing outside of your duties, why not go ahead and put your name... Though it might be a bit strange to get a press with you as the contact name, and you as the photography credit, but eh. If you think it might help you in the future, resume-wise, why not?

Also, for wording, "Photo by" is probably better if you don't care that much if they use a credit or not, and "Photo Credit: Yourname" probably better if you want to kind of nudge them a bit to credit it. But either way, it's probably a good idea to pick one and stick with it.

Yeah, it's part of my job, so I'll say copyright THEMUSEUM - thanks! I thought having my name on it would be strange too but then my art museum training kicked in and said "You can't send an image with no attribution!"

Typically, photos with press releases do not include credits. But copyright is fine.
