There's also the benefit of having the time and resources to draw your metafilter posts, instead of just writing them.

My last unemployment check came today. Boo. Now, to boost the employment numbers, the government will no longer count me as unemployed, since I'm not drawing money anymore! Good for you, US Government!

No, mats, you didn't miss anything, this is the first I'm saying of it. Yep, I'm unemployed. Even got fired, which has never happened to me before. It was not a real pleasant experience.

Everyone, please send good juju so that I'll be allowed to collect unemployment.

In Oregon, you can collect unemployment unless you quit without cause, or were fired for misconduct. I

know, I looked into that before I...umm...quit without cause.

So...2pm weekday meetup anyone?

What is misconduct under Employment Department law? Misconduct generally means you willfully or recklessly violated a standard your employer has the right to expect. The employer has the burden of proving misconduct. Misconduct does not exist if you were fired for exercising poor judgment on one occasion, if you made a good faith error, or if you were fired simply for lacking the skills or experience necessary to perform your job. In addition, absences due to illness or unavoidable accidents are not misconduct. If you were fired for conduct involving the use of drugs or alcohol, or not taking a drug test, special rules may apply.

Unemployment laws vary somewhat from state to state, but not too dramatically. In most states, being fired for incompetence or non-performance (for example) still makes you eligible for unemployment. Never EVER take an employer's (or ex-employer's) word for it, when it comes to whether you are eligible for unemployment.
