Ask MeCha: Suggestions for a memorial location in SF? [More:]Hi everyone. My ex died at the end of July and I'm trying to suss out a good place to hold her memorial at the end of the month. She really loved San Francisco and the ocean and ideally I would have her memorial on a bluff overlooking the Mendocino coast but that's not particularly practical at the moment. A couple of pregnant women and my ex's mom (who's 76) will also be attending, so it probably needs to be fairly accessible to those with mobility issues. It's been suggested that the service be done in the Presidio, Crissy Field, Golden Gate Park, Treasure Island, and Fort Mason. Would anyone be able to narrow it down within any of the above locations? All suggestions are welcome. (I do realize that choosing someplace special to her would make the most sense, but all the places that come to mind are the restaurants which she loved and having a wake at one of them has its own set of issues associated with it, but it's a thought)

Thanks bunnies.
Have a look at the Warming Hut at the western end of Crissy Field. Good parking, good paved accessibility, a number of private-ish picnic tables, a large pier, and nice views of the bridge and the bay. plus there's a small cafe for coffee and hot chocolate, which is always nice after an emotionally draining event.

I go there to get a sammich for lunch when I'm having a stressful day and need a reminder of why I love SF. It's one of my favorite spots.

Thanks for the suggestion, Triode. The Warming Hut and its picnic tables sound great - I'm familiar with the location but hadn't seriously considered it until now.

I second Triode's suggestion. It's really pretty up there.

And I love the area around Fort Mason, but I'm having trouble narrowing it down to anything other than "That pretty place where you can see the bridge."

The other thing you might consider is going into Sausalito or someplace else in Marin, so you could see the entirety of San Francisco but be in a car-friendlier smaller city (this would assume people have cars to get there, or that the ferry, which I know nothing about, works on the day you're planning for). There is a restaurant there whose entire gimmick is that it has a beautiful view of the city, The Spinnaker. The food is fine, though nothing hugely special, but the view really is nice.

There's also the area around the Mountain Home Inn in Mill Valley, which is right on the Hoo-Koo-E-Koo trail, which has (I think) some of the prettiest views of the city, and you're surrounded by redwoods and such. Ikkyu2 and I drive by the Inn all the time, and there's a parking lot, but I know nothing about it beyond that.

(I certainly think having it in SF proper is a great idea; just trying to give you more options in case you want them.)

And let me know if you need any help with anything, ooga. I hope you're doing OK.

Occhi - thanks for those great suggestions. Since this is a fairly last-minute affair and a bunch of folks are coming up from the Peninsula, the South Bay and as far out as Aptos, I'm leaning towards a public space here in the city. Throwing a bridge in there would just be cruel;) But those options would be great if I had more time in which to do this.

Things are hectic - I'll send you e-mail since I don't really feel like whingeing too much on MeCha. Thanks again, though.
