What's the causative factor there? Can the pickled beets ever be consumed independently of the mac and cheese?

Oh yes, they can be consumed on their own. However, mac and cheese cannot be consumed without the pickled beets. (Home-canned by my mom, by the way.)

My brother is disgusted by the bloody pink color of the resulting union.

I'm not sure I've ever had a pickled beet. I'm having a hard time imagining its imaginary taste working with mac and cheese, though I can imagine pickles being immensely wonderful with mac and cheese, and now I'm really craving macaroni and cheese with pickles.

Damn you.

Heh.

Last time they were here, my mom brought me a case of stuff she canned. I'm sure there are more pickled beets in there than I'll ever eat. (I still haven't really looked in the box, which lives on the top shelf of the pantry.)

I'll bring you a jar.
