Site Information: As you may have noticed, The site has been offline / very slow recently. [More:]The error may have been caused by something I have done, or it may be an underlying problem with the people who host the server. Whatever the situation, I've had to make some emergency tweaks until I and the hosting company have time to investigate further. What this means for you is that for the short-term certain parts of the site may not work. (For example, the wiki). I apologise for any inconvenience, but would like to reassure you that we are working very hard to solve this issue.

Gosh - That sounded posh. In short, sorry dudes. Really - I'm trying.
Big love, seanyboy. These things happen.

Seany, I'm sure you don't need advice, but can you see if the slowdown is affecting the db too, by connecting directly to it and doing some selects?
posted by orthogonality 13 September | 16:16
"May have noticed"? Heh. I'm confident that the GDP will be up significantly this quarter as a result of the increased productivity of Metachatters. Expect to hear about it on NPR.

Godspeed, seanyboy.

ortho - I'd love some advice. If you have msn messenger or iChat, I'm here to talk. email in profile. (If you can get to it...:) )

The SQL database isn't slowing down at all. I have a few select statements that run slowly, but they don't get run very often. Memory is fine, the processor is fine. There's noting in any of the logs. I'm pretty certain the error is being caused by the host, but who knows?

seany, any SQL help you want from me, just ask.

Seanyboy is the new Matt. . .

*smile*

I appreciate your efforts. . .one does not know how much one misses something, until one does not have access to it.

Actually I don't have msn messenger, or ichat (instant messaging weirds me, for some reason.) However, I will immediately go to #bunnies irc. will that work for you?

As well as everything else, I'm in the process of switching computers.... Give me five mins....

Seriously. I got an unprecedented amount of work done today.

Thanks for all you're doing, seanyboy. I know it must be frustrating, but we're pulling for you!

This is the last straw, seanboy. You've forced me to procrastinate on *gasp* wikipedia!

(nothing but love; we were all waiting patiently, our little bunny ears tilted forward in anticipation).

I am appreciative of Metachat and the time and effort put into keeping it up.

THANK YOU MOST SINCERELY!!!

I know! Today I wrote all my POs, planned out the calendar for the next two months, answered all the email, started a strict hourly regimen of LaLanne-style calisthenics, put up 10 quarts of tomatoes, designed a typeface, outlined a novel, built a small ship model, and created this map of America out of M & Ms. And still found time to make a delicious and nutritious lunch for the whole family!

Seanyboy, is there any chance that your host has capped your bandwidth without telling you? I imagine that adding MeCha to your stable created a huge spike in your traffic and I have had a host freak out and cap the traffic after a surge in bandwidth, while denying it at the time.
posted by dg 13 September | 18:05
No dg. It's something else - something weird and darksidey. I'm betting on it.

Anyway. Short term - no wiki, All posts more that a month old are "hidden" and I'll get back to you when I know something more.

orthogonality helped me out lots tonight, and I'd like to publically thank him for his help. You're a Star. Thank You.

Having hung out in #bunnies for a while as seanyboy and orthogonality were back-and-forthing on this, I can attest to the vast amount of work done to get things up and running.

Well done fellas!

At least you all had work to do, I was home sick in bed. My CTRL+R button is practically wore out from my frantic reloading.

Would it be possible for their to be access to one page from the Wiki- specifically, the page about the Vegas meetup?

And now I'm being told I'm "not authorized to view" Metafilter, which is somewhat more sinister than my usual MeFi flake-out messages.

Is this an NSA thing?

essexjan's being too modest; she helped out too, an her banging on the site made it possible to get good metrics on the problem.

If the problem lies where I think it does, putting up the entire wiki ought to be OK; and if it's not, that will refine our knowledge of what the problem is, so it would be a useful "diagnostic".
