The wiki article is somewhat interesting. The word skunk is derived from the Abenaki word for the animal.

My mom's miniature dachshund has been sprayed at least five times by her neighborhood skunk. You'd think she would learn...

q: nope, i did manage to start a fire though...

There is a skunk family living in the woods behind our house. They are good neighbors for the most part, except that most summer nights we are keenly, olfactorily aware of their presence.

One night I went outside to put out the trash and came ankles-to-face with one of them. Its reflexes were quicker than mine; it turned and waddled away as fast as it could.

One of three who I suspect are living under my shed. I've actually stopped putting out seed in a platform feeder and covering up the garbage but they're still coming around. The only nerve wracking part is when we walk our dog. She sees one and thinks "CAT!!" and wants to chase it. Luckily they hurry away when they hear us coming.

I do hear they can make great pets, descented.
