MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and
chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ. Please note: This is important.
I was beyond fed up with that religious bigot (and didn't appreciate being told to "chill" when he tried to shove his faith down someone's throat--he had ample time to do this on his mission).
I hate to wetblanket the thread, but we had to come up with a plan to make sure metachat didn't turn into a little enclave where we talk about other mefi members on the side... And the policy that we came up with is that if someone becomes the topic of negative conversation, then they will be sent an email about the thread and invitation to sign up.
Yeah, you're probably right. But jessamyn closed the thread a bit too quickly for my taste. I think it's pretty obvious Jason was lying when he tried to get us to think raydexter was primarily his daughter's account.
I understand... and I do think that in the unusual situation where a metatalk thread is closed before people can work through the problem, then, sure, they can go on talking about it here. But I'm just warning y'all about the currency you'll be using to do it in this case.

Well, not really, taz. rinkjustice isn't "another mefi member" anymore. He pulled one of the worst tricks you can pull and got banned, which easily leaves him outside the protection of your (very smart, polite and useful) guideline about not using MeCha to vent about other MeFi members.
So, if one were inclined to keep venting about the insulting horseshit he regularly spewed at one of our favorite sites, one could conceivably justify it that way. ;)
I've always wanted to make a site out of pure meaness that existed solely to point out and discuss the various flameouts, stupid comments and bannings from MeFi. But despite the brief amusement it would bring me, I am too lazy. Alas. Someone else will do it up right eventually.
Heh, that was my religious sex AskMe, it's actually a good thing this came out, because at the time I actually started to doubt myself because two people told me the same thing. Clearly, I should wait until there are three!
I think the issue of sock puppets in Ask Metafilter is a valid question to pose in MetaTalk. I think it should be an explicitly ban-worthy offense to try to create an illusion of (even partial) consensus by agreeing with yourself using multiple accounts. I would post this, and use that thread as one example... but I don't have the energy to deal with a MetaTalk thread today. Mediareport, would you be up for posting something like this?

You're welcome, and sorry for the premature post-closing, but everyone was in a bizarro mood over there yesterday.
When people started talking about rj's teenaged daughter -- who we have no indication was actually involved, all signs point to rj setting up both accounts but there's no definitive way to tell that sort of thing if two people live together -- I thought it was time to put it to bed.
The tendency of people to give people (especially ex-members) a thrashing in MetaTalk causes us a lot of headache since then people find themselves being thrashed via Google and want us to go in and edit ancient threads. In many cases these are people, as in this case, who were abusing the site and so it's a tough call. I didn't want rj's daughter to grow up, Google herself and find a ton of internet chuckleheads speculating about her because of something goofy her dad did, it sounds like her life may be complicated enough.
sorry for the blah blah blah admin blah blah, just wanted to spell that out. And yeah, taz, if we see people using sock puppets to give the illusion of two people who both contribute (especially contributing to the same threads) we'll usually ban them.

That's good news. It shouldn't just be ban-worthy to do it in AskMe, though, in case that's how it currently works. Arguing with/for yourself using a sock is such a fundementally dishonest way of participating that it should be ban-worthy wherever it shows up on the site.
