29 August 2006

yesterday with nature. I saw 2 hummingbirds zipping in & around our trumpet vines. They were green, and made me smile.[More:]I told a friend about it over a beer later, and he said he was walking to work and felt this buzzing things in his hair. He thought it was a big bug, but when he pulled it out it was a freaking hummingbird. He has the best stories.
Heh. Yesterday I was watering my plants and I was standing directly underneath my hummingbird feeder, which was a few inches over my head. (I've got a family of 3, and they empty the thing within a matter of days.)

The male came down and eyed me a bit from about 3 feet away, then zipped off. A few seconds later, he landed on my head.

Hummingbirds are actually really curious creatures, and they're not really afraid of us.

Yeah, tonight I sat down near my butterfly bushes and a couple were flying around feeding on the bushes and other various plants. They buzzed me a time or two, trying to figure out what I was.

I have a pair of territorial fighting males at my house I think. I had friends visiting from Brooklyn with their three year old and it was cool to get to show her a pair of hummingbirds.

oh so way, pupster!

I'm pretty sure we don't have them in NZ, and I've only lived in downtown B'more and Manhattan in the States...

I have also never seen a hummingbird. But that's hardly surprising, because I don't think I've ever been to a country that has them.

Wow, I'm surprised that there aren't any hummingbirds down there.

Y'all can come to my house.

A hummingbird once hovered for a moment inches from my face at an exhibit at the Indianapolis zoo, where I was skippin' out on yet another temp job. I just went right on by my work exit and kept on drivin', from Cinci to Indianapolis. Quite a nice day. (My husband at time was not pleased, however.) I ate lunch at the war memorial statue at the center of town, surrounded by office workers in white shirts and pumps.

We have them at our feeder, here in Houston. They are small and metallic green, and very fast.

I saw my first hummingbirds last summer, when we stopped at a restaurant in Pennsylvania. They had a beautiful garden with a huge pond, some swallow nests and a couple of hummingbird feeders. I was thrilled to see them, even from a distance.

We put a feeder on the porch after one put his little beak in the back of the vacuum cleaner... so cute :) Here's a cool hummingbird nest link my daughter sent out... it looks kind of like a regular nest until the last page.

This little lady was at one of my three feeders in my yard. It gets so crowded, with about 6 or seven of them all chasing each other around. I was filling one of my feeders when they came right up to me. They were less than an arms length away, and even chased each other around right around me. I could have stayed all day, hoping one would land on me.
This is a female ruby-throated hummingbird, by the way, the only variety on the East Coast.
