Ode to Pink... an evening at Waltz-Astoria. [More:]

Last night, Jon and I met up with TrishaLynn at Waltz-Astoria for their monthly Spoken Word Open Mic. It was my first venture into the cute, abeit disturbingly pastel, coffee house/beer & wine bar I discovered last week while parking my car. Both the cappucino and featured reader, Glenn Werner, were excellent -- dark and frothy, with a touch of cinnamon. The open mic was a mixed bag, as open mics tend to be, fluctuating somewhere between thumb screws and bliss, but, I must say, it was a hoot to read again. TrishaLynn gave a fine reading and read first, brave soul. Jon was happy (there was beer). And I thought I'd share one of the poems I read for the bunnies who couldn't make it.
Man, if I'd known about it, I'd have totally been there.

The aforementioned poem, from my Waltz-Astoria reading:

ODE TO PINK

You think you're sweet,
wrapped around babies
in nurseries, perched
on one leg at the zoo.

But you're labia,
pimples, pink-eye.

The color of choice
for prison walls, Barbie's
Dream House.

Stuck-up, pig-nose,
girlie-girl pink. Fake

like Sweet 'n Low,
not on the rainbow.

Cancer, canker,
prickly deceit
of a rose.

Stink, mink,
slink, fink.

Hearts aren't pink,
only Valentines.

Blacklists, bashings,
triangles, pinkos.

Fear is pink. Scars,
knuckles, lemonade.

Nickel a Dixie cup.
Drink.

Cool, JF. The next spoken word's not until September 25th, though, which is the day after we get back from Vegas, so I'm not sure I'll be up for that (our plane gets in late). But October for sure...

They do have music open mics, however, every Wednesday night, and if ya felt like performing sometime, we'd certainly be there to heckle ya. ; )

There's a great Greek restaurant just down the street from Waltz, too, which I highly recommend. And Tuesdays are comedy night at Waltz, so any locals who wanna make an evening of it will be fully entertained. (Plus mojitos at Fatty's across the street!)

The vision that springs to mind is of George Formby, who was an inexplicably popular British performer of the 1930s and 40s. He was an absolute fucking megastar, the Michael Jackson of his day. I kid you not.

And, of course, the only George Formby song that Joe Famous could possibly sing is ...
