28 August 2006

This past weekend I visited Princeton Cemetery, the final resting place of Aaron Burr, Grover Cleveland, John O'Hara, Jose and Kitty Menendez, and many others. Unfortunately, it started raining shortly after my arrival so I had to cut my visit short. I plan to go back and take some more photos, but I doubt I will find an epitaph cooler than this one.[More:]I'm not sure if Mr. Hahn was going for funny or bitter. I'm hoping funny.
I can't believe that's a real epitaph... I love it!!

Could be inspired by this other one in the Key West cemetery (it's a year older, but same message). Their cemetery is famous for oddball epitaphs, like "At Least I Know Where He's Sleeping Tonight".

amro--you were in my neighborhood! I live about a ninety-second walk away from that cemetery.

Ha, so do I Prospero (I moved here at the end of May). We'll have to organize a Princeton meetup!

(Which I suspect would just be the two of us.)

No, Princeton is just under an hour from me! And Amro, my heart beats faster to find someone else who enjoys cemeteries and hunting for epitaphs. I have to visit that cemetery one of these days. I have tons of pictures of stones, and I'v been collecting epitaphs for ages.

We could have a meetup in the cemetery! That would be a first.

amro--if you've just gotten here at the end of May, you haven't quite experienced the town yet. (I'm not sure I mean that in a good way.) Anyhow, the undergrads are due back next week, I think. (God help us.)

As for meetups--I approve, since I've been too lazy to cart myself into NYC for the meetups that seemingly happen there every single weekend. I'm up for an impromptu after-work drink in town as well, most evenings. E-mail's in profile.

Sundays are good for me, or a Tuesday, as I'm usually off then. My e-mail's also in my profile.

I used to tell people that L. Ron Hubbard was buried in that cemetery. I would point to a big ol' spherical monument on a stand that just said "HUBBARD" as proof.

No idea who's actually under that stone, and I haven't lived in Jersey for almost a decade so I may not be remembering it correctly.

Prospero and redvixen, look for an email from me!

I have heard of the epitaph; I just didn't realize it was on a stone right around the corner.

I think Mr. Hahn's epitaph was meant to be funny: the apocryphal tale of that epitaph has been around a lot longer than since 1980.

Wow - there's an etymology I didn't know existed.
I'd always attributed the quote to Spike Milligan (from the '50s), but a bit of digging around shows that the idea has been around for a while. I can't find a proper attribution though.
