25 August 2006

well well well. I like how mathowie said he stopped announcing the planning of anything he was doing and justs springs it on everyone. Keep expectations so low that no one expects anything, then when you actually do something, everyone is amazed.

It's a lot easier to do it that way than having everyone breathing down your neck when things fall behind schedule. (Why yes, I do speak from experience.)

I harbor no bitterness for this being years late -- it's just nice to finally have.

Anybody have a position for professional lounger? I can do it with one cocktail... or two! I'm that good.

Court siem, obviously he didn't have to do it at all - but it's really nice that he did. Why so bitter?

Well, there was a recent metatalk thread where he said he didn't announce anything because people kept sniping at him when he didn't deliver. I can't seem to find it now though.

The idea is if you don't ever promise to make anything, when you actually do something, everyone will praise you.

No, I think the idea really is that if you don't ever promise to make anything, you don't have disappointed (or just plain mean and bitchy) people complaining if there are delays.

Before RSI interfered, dodgy was building a cms from the ground up for metachat, but he didn't mention it in advance for this reason. Well, not the bitchy part, because people here pretty much don't swing that way... but because he knew that he couldn't be certain how long it would take or what problems he might encounter. And I don't want to speak for him, but I think he had seen enough of the nasty treatment Matt got when he had delays to realize that, yes, it's probably better to announce once you have the project in hand instead of letting people know you're working on it.

You realize that this only happened because I now have a job, right? Naturally. Metafilter in its blue indifference ignores my whole year of unemployment (even though I would, occasionally, think things like, wow, you know, maybe someday there'll be a jobs.metafilter and I could get a job, or, well, maybe not, and you know, do I really want a job?) and then, then when I actually get a job, metafilter comes up with this and already, already I tell you, it is listing a job! A job that's 2300 miles away from me and for which I am completely unqualified! Damn them. Damn them all.

I am so fucking sick and tired of people who criticize other people's hard work. Especially when it's basically volunteer.

And so what if setting low expectations is what he did? How does that affect you directly, exactly? How hard would it be to channel the energy it took you to type that crit into something positive? Are you that spoiled, entitled and self righteous that you can't even do that?

Sorry. Passive criticism really trips my annoyance trigger.

Sweet! Now I can finally get that job that will allow me to work from Matinicus Island so I can go live there.

just for the record, chewatadistance, I always feel really guilty when passively criticizing mathowie.

but he posted it on MetaTalk, where we're all supposed to go and talk about things related to the site. that post is the compromise between floating an idea and launching a completed project.

the thing I'm confused about is which subsite category JobsFilter fits into. it's sort of like MetaFilter and AskMe for the usefulness and potential appeal outside of the existing MeFi community. but it's also sort of like Music, Talk, and Projects in that it's by and for MeFites.

ps -> if any of you have a listing for slow talentless hacks please do contact me before posting. I'm the best in the business.

Well, it works for Dubya.

I am really hoping we can get a "jobs wanted" subsection.I'd like to advertise my willingness to do freelance editing.

That'd be great, swan.

That'd be great, Swan. And I'd post interest in freelance writing...along with hundreds of others, sure, but hey.
posted by Miko 25 August | 09:48
I'd post my own interest in freeloading. Hell, I'd even change my name to Freddy.
posted by eekacat 25 August | 09:57
Yeah, a LOT of people on MeFi would be interested in doing freelance writing. I expect you'd only get it if someone was blown away by the quality of your posts though.

But of course!

Well, this is cool and I second chewatadistance and taz' comments about criticism. While this has been on the slow boiler for 3 years that I know of, it is just great to see it finally here. Now, if only the closest jobs weren't thousands of miles away ...

I wonder if there have been a few deletions - the "logged in as ..." message says there have been 15 jobs since my last visit, but there are ony 8 there. Tests, maybe, but I hope it can be kept as useful as AskMe would be if it was not basically the same questions over and over.
