Site Changes: What's happening at Metachat. [More:]

If you've seen dodgygeezer's video post, then you know that the geezer is having RSI problems and won't be able to continue doing Metachat wizardworks. But because the site just wouldn't be the same without a sweet, silly, funny, wacky Brit fiddling about under the hood (or should I say "bonnet"?), we decided we needed to get us another one of those to carry on a grand tradition, so seanyboy will be taking the baton as chief engineer and hostdaddy. He will also be picking up the hosting for Radio Metachat, and our mudpuppie will be doing the admin work for that.

The changeover is scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon, North American time (European evening / wee hours of the next morn, downunder). We will let you know before it happens, and the site will be down for some period of time, after which we'll see if everything is functioning as usual. The wiki will be transferred over at some point after that, so if you can't find the wiki once the site is up, don't worry - it'll be along shortly.

So, if you drop in at any point tomorrow and find that there's no "there" there... This is why. If IRC bunnies who are able can kind of hang out on the channel to clue in any people who might happen to rush there in a panic, that would be sweet. As in Ninja Sweet.

Though he can't be typing a lot, dodgygeezer will still be around to help us out, dj some phat tunes :), possibly perform more heart-wrenchingly poignant guitar serenades, and, if we're lucky, present us with some more five-star-Gene-Siskel-says-thumbs-up video postings. He will always be at the heart of Metachat.

I also want to thank seanyboy for stepping up for us in our hour of need. He's been right here with us since the beginning, and now... well... now, he can't ever leave. Ever. Bwahahahaha!!

So to sum up:

dodgygeezer → bad hands, no type-y, no metachat code-y no more
seanyboy → puts head in lion's mouth, for sake of bunnies
metachat → moves house, will be down for some time tomorrow
mudpuppie → radiomama, she'll spin you right 'round, like a record baby
taz → loves all these people, and you too
Hello everyone.

I think taz sums up everything that needs to be said, but I'd just like to add a couple of personal things.

Firstly, many thanks to dodgy for his superior skillz and excellent micro over the last year and a bit. I think the character of this place owes a lot to the combined abilities of both taz and dodgygeezer, and I'm sure his administrative absence will be felt.

(Gosh - that sure sounds formal.)

Secondly, I'm not a PHP programmer or a Linux administrator by trade, so I apologise in advance for any cockups that may occur. Assume that we'll be limping along at warp 2 for a while. You're all free to email me (address in profile) about whatever, but my main focus is going to be technical so please take that into consideration.

That's all. Once again, thanks to dodgy and thanks for the opportunity to give something back to a site that has always felt a little like a home to me.

seanyboy will be a kick-ass admin. and of course i'm very happy that us brits are keeping our end up. it makes me swell with pride, and a few other feelings too.

and with pupps doing the radio admin it means i can stop apologising for being crap. yay!

the fact that people are happy, willing and able to step in like this shows just what a great community this is.

i'm very grateful to all my friends at metachat - thanks everyone.

I'm sure this has been asked before and will be asked again, but is there a need to kick in for hosting costs and whatever it is that you coding types need to fuel yourself on, I think it's been stereotyped as Mountain Dew and Spawn Action figures (I last hung around with engineers and coders in the late 90's, as I'm sure you can tell) maybe it's Spicy Lobster Rolls and first editions of Joyce now, but I'm hoping not. Hmmm? Paypal? Voluntary giving to the limit of our limited means? If not, I'll just throw this shoebox of $20's up in the air and whatever God wants, he keeps.

Seanyboy's going to be monitoring things to see how it's going, but he may need to bump up his hosting, and if so, maybe he would appreciate a bit o' help.

And radio hosting is always up for contributions, so give us a couple of days to get stuff switched around, sweet Wino, then you can use the paypal "contribute" on the radio page, and those funds will go to seanyboy for the hosting costs (both site and radio).

Many many thanks again to dodgy, and cheers and whuffles to seanyboy and mudpuppie for stepping into the breach. I'm sure you'll both do splendidly.

metachat → moves house, will be down for some time tomorrow

You mean I might actually get something done? Say it isn't so!!!!!! I might actually have to go outside! For longer than it takes to smoke a cigarette! *starts chewing nails obsessively, staring out the window* outside world bad, metachat good. outside world bad, metachat good.*

Yay!

Important radio note: I'm halfway through a 600-page, charmingly draconian list of radio Dos and Don'ts that includes creative penalties for doing the Don'ts and not-doing the Dos. Some of the punishments involve a verbal berating that will be administered by a humorless German friend of mine. Therefore, I need all current and prospective DJs to please email me your home and cell phone numbers okay thanks.

Regime change is fun, boys and girls.
posted by mudpuppie 23 August | 13:29
Um, I was just kidding. I don't really need your phone numbers. Sorry if it wasn't clear that I was joking.

But to the two people who have sent phone numbers to me, thanks. And also, do you have Caller ID?
