Help me with some research real quick? [More:] I need a few examples of cities where voters have turned down sales tax increases that would have funded a new sports arena, preferably in the last few years (and preferably without having approved the measured on a later ballot).

I need cities where voters have actually gone to the polls.

Does anyone know of 3-4 cities who have said no?
In trying to figure out whether Boston ever voted on Fenway in 2000 (which I still can't figure out), I came across the Field of Schemes site, which might help you.

Yeah, EJ, thanks. I've been googling, of course, but it's a lot of info to wade through. I figured at least a few people here would live in a place where this had happened, which would save me from wading through all the irrelevant articles.

Occhiblu, I found that site too -- it's just too much info to wade through in a hurry, and they're more about the campaigning than the info-banking. (Why wouldn't they be? It's a Nader group.)

Dersins -- perfect! Thanks very much.

(cities mentioned in the above links: San Francisco, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Toledo. Not all of these were sales tax increases, though-- there was at least one bond issue rejected.)

(...and Milwaukee...)

The San Francisco info gave me exactly what I needed. It's the best example, since it's just down the road, and the fact that voters rejected tax increases 7 times is exactly the point I needed to make.

Thanks, y'all.

I'm pretty sure they did this in MN for years until it was finally approved.

Not positive but it was a hotly debated issue for about a decade.

Effin' Seattle. Of course they had to go build it on us anyway.
