I am totally ticked off at this week's episode. Auf'ing Alison (no more rainbows and unicorns!) instead of Vincent clearly shows the hand of the producers, who probably want to keep Vincent around because they think his crazy is "good TV". The man (and his "art") repulses me.
And however much I hate Jeffrey as a person, I think his dress was better than Michael's. Why did they say "You came up just short" but then not explain why?
Producers, keep your hands off the judging decisions! Argh!
I don't think I like the episodes where they don't make "real clothes" so much. But I'll sit through anything to hear more Tim Gunn. Speaking of which, where the hell's his podcast itunes?
ITA about Alison v Vincent and also that Jeffrey should have won.
I was kind of liking Laura, and appreciating her straightforwardness, but that's just morphed into tactlessness I think. And by the way that the other designers go on about her in interviews, I think she's getting a kind edit, and was actually a lot more full on and maybe a bit nasty.
Kayne I find sometimes annoying, but damn he can sew. Even though his dress last night was fugly, it was still well put together. I like the way he calmly stood up to Laura as well.
Vincent must go. Soon. Back to his spaceship. And everytime he said that his dress "turned him on" I died a little inside.
Alison has turned out consistently good work. It sucks that she's gone.
I disagree. I think Alison's outfit was really bad. It was a tough call. I think the decision shows how the decisions are not made cumulatively, because clearly Alison was the better designer overall. I thought she had a shot at the top three even. And so cute.
FWIW, I don't find Vincent that interesting. He's good for a few laughs, but he's hardly "good TV". I hope he's off next week.
I too thought Jeffrey had it wrapped up. Michael's was nice, but Jeffrey's was really inspired. As far as the "came up short" comment - they usually don't say anything to second place, so it seemed they were tipping the hat to him a bit.
I agree with everything hellbient said, except that I do think Michael should have won. (See! I am my own person!)
But I really can't believe Allison is gone! That's highly upsetting.
Also, mb, they weren't calling the model plus-sized, just saying that the outfit made her look several sizes larger than she was. Which it did.
Though I'm kind of annoyed they get all over Allison because "a woman should know how to fit clothes to a woman" when they constantly attacked Santino for the same ill-fittingness last season and he made it to the final three.
Okay, I missed the episode, so I can't comment on the dresses. And I don't read the blog because I don't care that much about the show. All that said, I'm very very sad for the simple reason that Alison is my girlfriend and too adorable to be as sad as I'm sure she is. Must be like when the models get booted, heartWRENCHING. Like when a clown cries or something.
He called her "zaftig" on his first walk-around, too.
Alison shouldn't have left. The dress did make her model look bigger than she was, but the design was far more interesting and showed much more thought than Vincent's paper tube with stuff glued to it. It seemed like the judges were being harsher than normal in order to justify aufing her.
I agree that Jeffrey should have won. But overall, I think Michael's a better designer -- Jeffrey's dress last week was ugly and strange, and looked more battered than deconstructed. This week's was the closest to conventional design he's done, and it's not surprising that it was his most successful. (And he's such an egomaniac in the commentaries, I dislike him based just on that.)
I think gaspode's right about the kind editing of Laura. She's seriously hated by a couple people, and we haven't seen much of why. Her personal style and her design aesthetic (and the fact that she doesn't like dogs{!}) scream control freak, so I'm guessing that's what we're missing out on.
That said, I'm disappointed that this season seems like such a boys' club. The animosity toward some of the women has been a little shocking at times.
I'm not sure that Laura's actually that mean -- it feels like they're trying to play that up in the promos, but then when you see the entire conversation in context, it's not that hostile.
Like the "I worry about your character and that's worse" conversation. The ads made it look like a total screaming fight, and it just wasn't.
I also get the impression that the two gay boys may have more problem with the fact that she's a 40-year-old mom rather than because of anything she's actually done. There's an edge of "she's not cool enough" to their attitude, I think.
On preview: Yeah, that's not even getting into some of the crap coming out of Jeffrey's mouth. Like that time he declared the one word for Angela was "feminazi"? One, welcome back to 1995, dude, and two, based on what???
You're starting to piss me off because you are becoming "bad mommy" and I really don't want to start agreeing with Jeffrey. Also, invest in some double-sided tape for the sides of your dress, please. I don't need to be seeing what little boobs you have slabbed onto your chest.
---
Dear Jeffrey,
I loved your dress and as much as I love Michael, I think you should have won because you found a way to put color into your work the way the others didn't.
Having said that...SOUR GRAPES MUCH?
---
Dear Alison,
If you like, I can shank Vincent for you. It won't take much more for me to do it.
---
Dear Vincent,
I hope your wife will be willing to take you back after you quit your job and emptied out your 401K to do fashion again. Why are you still on this show?
---
Dear Angela,
Once again, I like your design. Once again, this surprises me. Maybe you do have that Wendy Pepper way of listening to people you should listen to (like Tim Gunn), and that's what's helping me like you again. Keep it up.
---
Dear Kayne,
I realized tonight that with your penchant for dipping into the L'Oreal make-up room for eyeshadow makes you Austin Scarlett 2.0, but at least you're willing to admit when you make a stupid design. I think you're still in because they want to keep seeing beautiful things out of you and that makes you lucky. Not as lucky as Vincent, but pretty damn lucky.
---
Dear Michael and Nina,
Just what the hell do you see in Vincent that I don't see? Why is he still on this show?
---
Dear Time Warner Cable (NY),
What the hell did you mean by putting the gay version of an Orbitz.com commercial and a Patron Silver commercial that referenced vibrator lengths in the same commercial block?
Oh, and Angela, we all figured out that "I'm going back to what I know" means "I'm going back to Jubilee Jumbles again and I'm not going to blatantly copy off of someone with vastly more taste than me."
OK, so if they were going to do the makeover challenge again this season, who would you like to see make over whom?
Here's mine:
* Laura make over Uli - I'd love to see her in something crisp.
* Kayne or Vincent make over Jeffrey (just because I hate him and want to see him humiliated).
* Michael make over Laura - he's got great construction skills and they're obviously friends and I'd love to see what he can do to update her look
* Angela make over Vincent (maybe it will send him over the edge into the mental hospital)
* Uli make over Angela - show her that you can use colors and patterns and be graceful instead of wacky.
I'm rooting for Uli cause she manages to take disparate patterns and wacky colors and makes them work together using the shape and lines of the garment instead of the fabric. And she's nice, and she's not an egotistical wanker, and because I think it would make Jeffrey's testicles crawl up and hide in his belly. Bastid!
