Askmecha: Like a dummy I wasted my askmeta question this week, so instead I'm bringing this to the bunnies.

Why in the world would they schedule an abdominal CT on my 21-week pregnant daughter? They left a message on her phone and when she called back they'd gone for the day...the doc's office will call her tomorrow according to the message.[More:]

All my googling tells me that CT scans are not usually done on pregnant women because of the radiation used. So far they have not indicated to my daughter that there is a problem, but they have been treating her like an idiot, not telling her anything probably because she is 19 and unmarried at the moment.

So what on earth is this????
Do you want me to post this to AskMe for you?

Oh, please do.

Thanks!

And let me know if I can return the favor when my week is up.

My pleasure. It's up. Good luck - I hope it's nothing serious!

It's not certain that CT scans are harmful, during pregnancy or at other times. More to the point though, it's also not certain that they're not. What is pretty certain is that bad doctoring is harmful.

But you neededn't panic. I'd bet that they are talking about ultrasound scans (though the jury is out on whether or not those are harmful during pregnancy). I'd guess that whoever left the phone message just got it wrong. But you do want your daughter to be treated by physicians who don't treat her like an idiot. I'd be more worried about that than about any sort of scan. You should think about taking her somewhere else. If the reason for their attitude is that she's young and single (and not just the usual "I'm a doctor and you're nothing"), then all the more reason to do so.

She's already had two ultrasounds, the last one just several weeks ago. And she is on her own, not even really wanting me to go to the doc with her (her fiance usually goes) mostly because she wants to be independent. But after her phone call I think she is rethinking that.

I have the three month ultrasound on my fridge and the placenta looks a bit low to me but I ain't a doc. Meanwhile they have been telling her after every test that everything looks good but at this point I think they are lying. Not that I am gonna tell HER that.

Turns out when she called this morning they didn't know what she was talking about. Apparently they called the wrong number re the CT scan or something.

Grr.
