AskMecha: I recently reinstalled Windows XP SP2. For some reason, my Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service is dropping and I can't restart it without rebooting.[More:]
Here's the scenario, about 30mins after booting up I get a dialog saying "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
At this point, my wife's computer loses its Internet connection, though mine keeps working.
In the services window the ICS service is stopped, and if I try to restart it, I get "Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied."
Sounds to me like it could be a virus disabling my Firewall (which is part of the ICS service for some reason). AVG antivirus and HitMan Pro have yet to find anything.
If I reboot, the ICS service is running, for about 30 more minutes.
SP2 screws with wireless on some computers. I have it installed and working fine on two of our computers... ties to install it on the wife's and it killed the connection, I tried the various fixes found on the inter webs and eventually removed SP2, and volia it works again.
Stupid frikken windows

edgeways: did it screw your ICS? Cause I'm not using wireless.

how very odd... I was forced to take the bus to work this AM (torrential biblical proportions downpour) and the bus driver was asking a tech-savvy passenger / acquaintance of his about this very same issue... seems Bus Driver dude installed SP2 last night and bingo! his wireless went AWOL.

dunno what the outcome or solution of this was cos I decided at this point to quit eavesdropping and went back to my book... besides which, being a Mac user, this is an annoyance that I, personally, won't have to deal with

It's been a few months, but I think so signal. I've been dreading having to reinstall it because support for SP1 ends in October, but might have to bite the bullet and try again.

Have you reinstalled all the post SP2 fixes, etc?

Actually, wired or wireless, why not just get a cheap 4-port router and forget about ICS? I'd be willing to bet plenty of people here could talk you through the set up, and it really isn't that hard to begin with.
